Ask a question about your model in plain language, "GFA by usage," "units per storey," and get back a table or chart on the sheet, instead of hunting through a report for the number a reviewer just asked about.
Ask a question with Data chat
Data chat builds a custom table or chart from your model by asking a question in plain language, instead of picking from a fixed set of categories. It's a real conversation, not a one-shot query, so you can ask follow-up questions and refine what comes back.
Click chat in the top bar to open Data chat. This needs an Anthropic / Claude credential picked in Settings → Credentials first; the button stays disabled with a tooltip explaining why until one is set. See Credential below.
Type a question in the box at the bottom of the panel, for example "GFA by usage", "area by layer and usage as stacked bar", or "units and GFA per storey", and press
Enterto send it. UseShift+Enterfor a line break instead of sending.
Data chat shows a Thinking… indicator while it works, then replies with a short description of what it built and the query behind it.
Click Preview to run the query against your current model and see the result as a table, up to 20 rows at a time, with a note if there are more.
Click Insert table to drop it onto the sheet, or Insert chart if the query came back with a chart attached, a bar or stacked-bar chart.
Ask a follow-up question
Data chat keeps the whole conversation while the panel stays open, so a follow-up message can build on an earlier query without restating it, for example asking to split an existing "GFA by usage" result by layer as well. Send another message the same way, by typing and pressing Enter.
Click Clear in the panel header to wipe the conversation and start fresh, or ✕ to close the panel. Both clear the conversation, since Data chat doesn't keep a history between sessions. See Chat history isn't saved below.
Data chat's conversation only lives in your browser for as long as the panel stays open. Closing the panel or reloading the page clears it, and there's no way to get an old conversation back. A table or chart you've already inserted onto the sheet is saved with your layout as normal. Only the conversation that produced it is lost.
Edit the generated query
Every Data chat response includes the actual query behind it, plain JavaScript that runs against your model's data rather than a fixed report format. Click Edit on a response to change that code directly, Done to go back to read-only, and Preview to re-run whichever version is current. This is useful for a small tweak, like adjusting a threshold or a label, without writing a whole new question.
If a query fails
If a query can't run, for example because it timed out or hit an error, Preview shows a red Error: line instead of a result table. Edit the query and press Preview again, or describe the problem in a follow-up message and ask Data chat to fix it.
Update or modify a chat-made table
A table built with Data chat has its own controls once it's on the sheet: Hide lines, a Refresh from model button that recomputes it from the latest model using its saved query, and Modify in chat, which reopens Data chat with that table's query prefilled so you can describe a change in plain language instead of hand-editing it.
A chat-made chart doesn't have a Refresh from model or Modify in chat button. To change a chart, ask Data chat for a new one.
Live tables
Choose whether a Data-chat table or chart updates automatically as the model changes. Open Settings → Display and turn Live tables on so chat-made tables and charts auto-refresh with the model, or off so they stay frozen at the values they had when you inserted them.
Live tables only affects tables and charts built with Data chat. An area schedule always needs its own ↻ button pressed to refresh instead.
Credential
Data chat needs an Anthropic / Claude credential. Add one in Settings → Credentials, under Anthropic / Claude, or paste your own key into the Anthropic API token field beneath it.
