A footprint that won't save or a layer that won't take new shapes stalls a site study. Find the problem below for the usual cause and the fix.
For data layers that won't show, load, or add, troubleshoot data layer issues.
Problems with drawing
I can't draw at all
If no drawing tool works anywhere in the project, check where you are and what access you have.
You have view-only access
A project shared with you as View is read-only. You can't draw, edit, or paste. Giraffe shows "You do not have edit permission." when you try.
Published and embedded links are always read-only, even for the project's owner. Open the project itself from your Home screen instead.
To draw, ask the project owner or a Workspace admin to change your access to Edit or Admin.
You're in a Space
A Space shows a group of projects together on one map. It doesn't hold drawn geometries, so the drawing tools don't work there. Giraffe shows "You must be in a project to draw something." when you try.
Open one of the Space's projects, or create a new project, to draw.
I can't see something I drew
Check these, in order:
Is its drawing layer hidden in the Layer Palette?
Is it on a scenario that is turned off?
Is its opacity 0% in the appearance properties?
Is the engine paused?
Is it below something else in 3D?
A shape I draw doesn't appear
If drawing works and a new shape doesn't stay, look for a toast at the bottom of the screen. Common causes:
The active drawing layer is hidden or locked. Show or unlock it, or set a different layer as active.
The project is still syncing with the server. Wait a few seconds, or refresh the page.
My shapes draw, and no metrics or results update
The engine is paused. A paused engine draws shapes and doesn't solve them, so metrics and flow results stop updating. The map gets a colored border and a Resume Engine button appears at the top right. Click Resume Engine.
Undo doesn't work
Press Cmd/Ctrl+Z to undo and Cmd/Ctrl+Shift+Z to redo. Some non-QWERTY keyboard layouts don't map these shortcuts correctly. Use Undo and Redo in the menus instead. In Giraffe 6 they're in the Edit menu of the top bar. In Giraffe 4 they're in the drawing toolbar's ••• menu. Undo isn't available in a Space.
Copy and paste is blocked by my browser
Giraffe needs your browser's permission to read the clipboard when you paste. If the browser blocks it, Giraffe shows "Error: Could not paste. Check your browser permissions for this site."
The first time you paste, your browser asks for clipboard access. Click Allow.
If you blocked it before, turn it back on:
Click the icon to the left of the address bar.
Open Site settings.
Set Clipboard to Allow.
Refresh the page and paste again.
Learn more about changing site permissions in Chrome. Your company may also block clipboard access in managed browsers. Ask your IT team if the setting is locked.
Paste is also blocked in view-only projects.
"Your geometry is too far from the project origin to give accurate measurements"
Giraffe measures most accurately near your project. This orange warning appears in the bottom bar when some geometries sit far from your project, so their areas and lengths may be off.
This often happens after you paste geometries from another project. Paste keeps the coordinates the geometries had in the original project, so they can land far from your site.
Click the warning in the bottom bar to select the geometries causing it.
Move them to your site, or delete them.
Next time, use Paste to center (Cmd/Ctrl+Shift+V) to place pasted geometries in the middle of your view.
"You are drawing over too large an area for accurate measurements"
This orange warning appears when your geometries, or your project boundary, cover too much ground to measure accurately. Click the warning to select the geometries causing it. If nothing is selected, the project boundary is too large. Split a very large study into smaller projects.
The grid won't show
Press G to show or hide the grid. Or open the Map menu and choose Show Grid. The grid isn't available in a Space.
"The grid is not defined yet" means the project has no grid origin. Draw a project boundary, or open the Map menu and choose Edit Grid….
"Grid origin is too far from map center to display grid" means you've panned more than 100 km from the grid origin. Pan back toward your project.
Problems with drawing layers
I can't hide or lock a drawing layer
You can't lock the active drawing layer, or a group that holds it. In Giraffe 6, you can't hide it either. Set a different drawing layer as active first: click the circle at the left of its row in the Layer Palette. If your project has only one drawing layer, it's always active. Add another drawing layer before you lock or hide it.
I can't draw on a layer
Geometries you draw always go on the active drawing layer. You can't draw on a data layer. If the active drawing layer is locked, unlock it with its padlock, or set a different layer as active.
I can't paste geometries
You can't paste onto a locked layer. Unlock the active drawing layer with its padlock, then paste again.
I can't delete a drawing layer
Giraffe won't delete a drawing layer that holds geometries derived from other layers, such as geometries generated by blocks or flows.
My geometries don't count in Urban
Urban skips geometries on hidden drawing layers, drawing layers at 0% opacity, and drawing layers inside a hidden group. Turn the layer back on in the Layer Palette. Any opacity above 0% counts.
Problems with height and levels
Levels, Floor to Floor, and Height set how tall a building is and how much floor area it counts. Find the problem below for the usual cause and the fix.
Adding levels doesn't make my building taller
A building's height is its Levels multiplied by its Floor to Floor. If adding levels doesn't change the height, select the geometry and check these in the properties palette:
Is Height set? A value in Height overrides Levels and Floor to Floor, so the building stays at that height. Hover over the Height field and click Revert to default (the back arrow) to clear it.
Is Floor to Floor 0? Levels multiplied by 0 is always 0. Some usages, like Carpark - Underground, set Floor to Floor to 0. Enter a new Floor to Floor value, or choose a different usage.
Is it a basement? Depth overrides Levels and Floor to Floor for basements. Change Depth instead.
Did you enter a whole number? Giraffe rounds Levels down, so 3.5 levels builds 3.
Learn when to use Levels, Floor to Floor, or Height to set a geometry's height.
My building has no floor area, or doesn't count in Urban
A geometry with a Height value doesn't count as a building. Giraffe can't tell how many levels it has, so it has no Gross Floor Area, and Urban leaves it out. To fix it, select the geometry, hover over the Height field in the properties palette, and click Revert to default (the back arrow). Then set Levels and Floor to Floor.
Urban also skips geometries on hidden drawing layers and drawing layers at 0% opacity.
My building floats, or sits on top of another geometry
Building geometries on the same drawing layer stack when they overlap. Stack Order sets which one sits higher. Select the floating geometry and check these in the properties palette:
Does it overlap another building on the same drawing layer? It stacks on top of that building. Set Force Stack to Never to keep it on the ground, or move it to a different drawing layer.
Is its Stack Order too high? Lower the Stack Order number to move it down the stack.
Is Base Height set? Base Height lifts a geometry off the ground. Hover over the Base Height field and click Revert to default (the back arrow) to put it back on the ground.
My buildings don't stack
Only building usages on the same drawing layer stack. If one building won't sit on top of another, check these:
Are they on different drawing layers? Move them onto the same drawing layer, or raise the top one with Base Height.
Is Force Stack set to Never? Set Force Stack to Default or Always.
Is the usage a building type? Roads, paved areas, basements, and generic usages don't stack. Landscape stacks on buildings only when Force Stack is Always.
Learn how stacking and Base Height work.
My drawing lands on the ground instead of on top of a building
A new geometry stacks on a building when the two overlap on the same drawing layer. Select the new geometry and check these in the properties palette:
Is it on the same drawing layer as the building? Geometries on different drawing layers don't stack. Move it onto the building's layer, or raise it with Base Height.
Does its usage stack? Roads, paved areas, basements, and generic usages don't stack. Landscape stacks on buildings only when Force Stack is Always.
Is Force Stack set to Never? Set Force Stack to Default or Always.
Did the building move up onto it? The new geometry has a lower Stack Order than the building, so it sits underneath. Raise its Stack Order above the building's.
Stack Order 0 is normal. Giraffe gives a new geometry Stack Order 0 when you start drawing on open ground, and one higher than the building when you start drawing on its roof. Stack Order sets which overlapping geometry sits higher. It doesn't decide whether a geometry stacks.
Learn how stacking and Base Height work.
My stack order numbers are in the millions
Run Recalibrate stack order to renumber every geometry's Stack Order from the lowest number up. Each geometry keeps its place in the stack. Stack Order numbers usually climb this high after a lot of cutting and pasting, since each paste goes above the geometries it overlaps.
Press
SpaceorCmd/Ctrl+Kto open the command bar.Type "recalibrate" and choose Recalibrate stack order.
A message at the bottom of the screen tells you how many geometries changed. Press Cmd/Ctrl+Z to undo it.
When you open a project that has stack orders over 1,000,000, Giraffe asks Recalibrate stack orders? Click Recalibrate to fix them right away.
Problems with usages and properties
A geometry takes its property values from its usage. A value you set on the geometry itself overrides the usage for that geometry only. Most "it didn't update" problems come from a value set on the geometry. In the properties palette, a value from the usage is grayed out, and a value set on the geometry isn't.
I changed a geometry's usage and it didn't update
Values already set on a geometry stay when you switch its usage. That includes values you typed and values the old usage added when you first applied it. The new usage only fills in properties the geometry doesn't have yet. To use the new usage's value, select the geometry, hover over each field that didn't change, and click Revert to default (the back arrow).
I edited a usage and some buildings didn't update
Editing a usage updates every geometry with that usage, except where a geometry has its own value for that property. Those geometries keep their own value. To make them follow the usage, select them, hover over the field in the properties palette, and click Revert to default (the back arrow). Reverting with several geometries selected reverts all of them.
I changed a property and only one building changed
The properties palette only changes the geometries you have selected. To change the value on many buildings, do one of these:
Edit the usage. Click the pencil (Edit usage) next to Usage in the properties palette, and change the value there. Every geometry with that usage updates, unless it has its own value. The pencil appears when the selected geometries share one usage.
Select them all first. Select every geometry you want to change, then change the value in the properties palette. This sets the value on each geometry, so later edits to the usage won't reach them.
Learn how usage and geometry values work together, and how to edit usages.
