Add the MCP connector app

Get your Giraffe Project Ready for MCP

Written by Holly Conrad Smith

Every AI assistant reaches your Giraffe project through the MCP app. The MCP app works in Giraffe v6, inside a saved project. Scratchpad has no saved project, so the MCP app can't connect there.

The Giraffe MCP is in beta. Its tools and setup steps change as we test and improve it. Reach out to your account team to try it out!

Add the MCP connector app

Add the MCP app to your project and click Connect before you set up your assistant.

  1. Open a saved Giraffe project in your browser.

  2. Add the MCP app to your project from the App Library and open it in its own panel.

  3. Click Connect in the MCP app. This links your browser to your Giraffe account. The panel says "This browser is linked" when it works.

  4. Sign in to Giraffe from your AI assistant within 30 minutes, following that assistant's setup steps.

The Connect link in the MCP app lasts 30 minutes. If your assistant says your browser isn't linked, click Connect again and retry the sign-in.

Choose the project your assistant works in

Your AI assistant works in one Giraffe project at a time. The active project is the one whose browser tab, with the MCP app open, you brought to the front most recently. To switch projects, open the MCP app in the other project and click into that tab. The MCP app panel says "The agent is working in this project." in the active project.

Check that your AI assistant is connected

Ask your AI assistant "Is Giraffe connected?" It checks the Giraffe MCP connection and tells you the next step if something is missing. Common fixes:

  • No browser session attached. Open your Giraffe project and the MCP app panel, then click Connect in the MCP app.

  • No project active, or the wrong one. Click into the browser tab of the project you want, with the MCP app open, to bring it to the front.

Ask your AI assistant to work in your project

Describe the result you want in plain language. Your assistant reads the Giraffe project first, then makes the change. Try prompts like these:

  • "List every building in this project with its usage, levels, and gross floor area."

  • "Change the usage of the selected building to Residential and add two levels."

  • "Check every building against a 24 m height limit and tell me which ones go over."

  • "Zoom the map to the project boundary and turn on the flood zones layer."

Your assistant works on the Giraffe project open in your browser. Keep that tab open, with the MCP app open in a panel, while it works. A small panel in the bottom left keeps the MCP app out of the way.
