When you open Giraffe, you probably started in Scratchpad. Scratchpad is an area where you can play with layers and geometries without saving your work - just like a back of the napkin sketch!

To save your work, you need to create a Project.

Once you create a project in Giraffe, your changes automatically save.

Start a new project

To start a new project from scratch, do one of the following:

Navigate to menu > new > new project

OR

Select the project switcher (in the top bar) > New Project.

A new blank project will open, ready for you to define the project boundary and save.

If you have work already on the map, like layers, lenses, or geometries, that you would like to save, proceed to the next section to define a boundary.

🚨 Warning: Clicking new project will clear all geometries, lenses, and layers from scratchpad!

Define a site boundary

Every project needs a boundary. It drives FSR/FAR, open space ratios, and more.

There are multiple ways to establish a project boundary. The most basic is to simply draw a boundary from scratch.

  1. Click “Draw Boundary” in the top center

  2. Draw your boundary. The boundary tool works the same as for any other shape in Giraffe.

  3. Click Save project in the top center

Enter project details

Once you click “save project” in the top center, you will be prompted to enter some project details.

  1. Give the project a name. By default, Giraffe inputs the inferred address.

  2. Save - the project is created and saved to the database upon clicking Save

  3. Cancel (x) - go back to scratch pad to make changes

    Enterprise only:

  4. Apply a template

  5. Enter values for Workspace Properties

Click Save to open the project

You will land in the saved project with the project boundary at the center of the canvas.

You can tell you're in a saved project because the name will display in the project switcher at the top left.

Now you're ready to start designing!

Once you've created a project, all changes are automatically saved.
