If your organization is utilizing an Authorize payment gateway to process donations, it may be helpful to understand the gateway's decline codes so you can assist any donors having issues when attempting to give.

Typically, the result message will provide some insight as to why a donor's card was declined, like a CVV Mismatch, Invalid Card Number, Invalid Expiration Date.

To see the Decline Code associated with the result message, you will first need to go to the Donation Details page for that donor. Then scroll down to "Associated Transactions" and click on the transaction code:

That will bring you to the Transactions Details page. At the bottom of the Transaction Details section, there is a dropdown you can click for Gateway Information:

When you click on it, the details provided by the gateway are displayed. The decline code is listed next to "Response_Reason_Code." Here the Reason Code is 6: The credit card number is invalid:

If the result message is not clear, or you want additional information about the decline, you can follow the above steps to see the Reason/Decline Code and match it to Authorize's response code document.

Authorize Decline Code URL: https://developer.authorize.net/api/reference/dist/json/responseCodes.json

The reference document is quite extensive, so we recommend using "find" to locate the exact code.
