MCP: Connecting ChatGPT to Elate

Learn how to connect your ChatGPT to Elate.

Connect ChatGPT to Elate using our Model Context Protocol (MCP) server to securely access your organization's strategic data directly within ChatGPT. Once connected, you can ask ChatGPT questions about your strategic plan, objectives, outcomes, and more without leaving your conversation.

Note: The steps below reflect the current ChatGPT Business experience. Depending on your ChatGPT plan or workspace configuration, some screens or labels may vary slightly.

Before You Begin

Before connecting ChatGPT to Elate, make sure you have:

  • An MCP Server URL

  • A Client ID and Client Secret. These are provided by your Elate Account Manager and are unique to the Elate/ChatGPT integration.

These credentials are generated when configuring an OAuth client for ChatGPT in Elate.

Creating the Elate App in ChatGPT

  1. In ChatGPT, open your Workspace menu.

  2. Navigate to Workplace Settings.

  3. Select Apps.

4. Click Create.

5. Enter a name for your app (for example, Elate).

6. Paste your MCP Server URL into the server URL field: https://mcp.goelate.com/mcp

ChatGPT will automatically discover the MCP server configuration and detect that OAuth authentication is required. It will also populate several OAuth settings automatically, including:

  • OAuth authorization URL

  • OAuth scopes

  • Other required authentication settings

You should not need to modify these automatically discovered values.

Configure OAuth

  1. Expand Advanced OAuth Settings.

  2. Enter your Client ID and Client Secret. Both fields can be provided by your Elate Account Manager.

  3. Verify that Client Secret Post is selected as the authentication method. ChatGPT typically detects this automatically.

  4. Select the check box next to “I understand and want to continue” in the bottom left.

  5. Click Create.

ChatGPT will create the app as a draft within your workspace.

Publish the App

  1. Open the Drafts section in Apps.

    • If you don't immediately see your app, refresh the page.

  2. Select your newly created Elateapp.

  3. Click Publish.

4. Expand the drop-downs and accept the required confirmation prompts.

Once published, the app becomes available to users in your ChatGPT workspace.

Connect Your Elate Account

After selecting Publish,

  1. Return to the ChatGPT home screen

  2. Select Plugins from the menu

  3. Open your Workspace’s plugin list

  4. Click the Plus next to the Elate plugin

  5. Review any permission prompts and select “Continue to Elate (Integration)”.

  6. You'll be redirected to Elate's OAuth authorization page.

7. Review the requested permissions and click Approve.

After authorization completes, you'll be redirected back to ChatGPT, where the app should display as Connected.

Start Using Elate in ChatGPT

Once connected, you can use Elate in two ways:

  1. Start a chat directly with the Elate app using the Try in chat button

2. Open a new ChatGPT conversation and select Elate from the Tools menu (accessible from the + button).

From there, ChatGPT can securely query your Elate workspace to answer questions about your strategic plan.

For example, you can ask:

  • Summarize my strategic plan.

  • List our current objectives.

  • Which objectives are at risk?

  • Show me the goals associated with this objective.

When ChatGPT needs information from Elate, it automatically makes secure MCP tool calls behind the scenes to retrieve the appropriate data before generating its response.

Troubleshooting

My app doesn't appear after I create it.

Refresh the Apps page. Newly created apps may take a few moments to appear in the Drafts list.

I can't connect after publishing.

Verify that:

  • The app has been published.

  • You're opening the app from Show in Directory before clicking Connect.

  • Your Client ID and Client Secret were entered correctly.

Some responses contain empty or incomplete information.

ChatGPT can only summarize the data available in your Elate workspace. If your workspace contains limited data or empty fields, responses may include blank, null, or zero values.

If you have any additional questions or feedback, please contact your Elate Account Manager!
