Using the Planning Feature to Plan and Prioritize Future Objectives

Elate's planning feature helps your team collaborate on what to focus on next.

Updated over 7 months ago

As you're transitioning and planning for future quarters or years, you're able to begin to brainstorm ideas with your team in Elate. The planning feature is at the team level and allows you to propose objectives and move them seamlessly through a review phase and a finalization phase.

Once your objectives are finalized, you're able to easily give them an effort and value score to show which objectives are highest value or which ones will take the most effort from your team.

Planning Next Quarter or Year

To get started with your planning process, navigate to the team you would like to plan for using the left side panel.

You are now on the team overview page. From here, select the Planning tab.

Please note that you will be planning for whatever duration is shown in the top right corner. You are able to show full year, half year, quarter, or month and you can tab forward (or backward) using the arrows to plan in the correct duration.

On the planning page, you're able to propose objectives and move them through the review and finalize columns as you decide what your focus will be for the next planning cycle.

You're able to easily begin by selecting the gray Add Objective button under the Proposed Objective column. From here, you can drag and drop the objective to the review column and finalized column.

Statuses during the planning phase are defined as follows:

  • Proposed Objectives

    • An objective in the idea phase that a team member thinks should be a priority for next quarter or year.

  • Objectives in Review

    • An objective that is a priority, but needs to have more details finalized, such as key results or who is responsible.

  • Finalized Objectives

    • An objective that is prioritized and all detail has been added. It is ready to be started next quarter.

When an objective is marked in the status Finalized Objectives it will display for that

time period on the Objectives tab. When you're viewing a future duration in the platform on the Objectives tab, you will also see a chart letting you know how many objectives are proposed, in review, and finalized.

Now that you have objectives finalized, you're able to move on to prioritizing them!

Prioritizing Objectives

From the team overview page, select the Prioritize tab to get started!

On this page you will see a prioritization matrix showing effort and value. You're able to drag and drop the objectives from the blue "Drag Objectives on the Grid to Prioritize" box. You're able to move them around where you see fit to show their value and effort.

As you can see from the screenshot above, the objective Enhance Platform Security is now showing as higher value and higher effort. You're able to select the 3 dot menu next to the objective and select View Details.

You will then be taken to the objective details page for that objective. On the bottom right side you will see an effort and value score for the objective.

You have now prioritized your objective!

As your planning future objectives, utilizing the planning and prioritize tabs for each team allows you to seamlessly plan with your team.
