Embedding Power BI in Elate

There are two main ways to embed Power BI in Elate. The first is to pull an entire dashboard view onto a team or company-level scorecard. The second and more popular way is to pull in an individual metric from Power BI to an outcome that can live on an objective or scorecard.

Embedding a Power BI Dashboard on a Scorecard

You are able to embed a Power BI Dashboard on company and team scorecards. To embed a Power BI dashboard on a scorecard, navigate to a scorecard without any outcomes, and click the blue +Add Scorecard button.

Now that you have a scorecard setup, you can embed a dashboard visualization from Power BI by clicking the +Embed Dashboard button.

Select the +Embed Dashboard button. You will then be prompted to select the source and add the URL for the dashboard.

Embed Scorecard Information:

  • Be sure to select "Power BI" as your "Embed Source". "Embed URL" refers to the URL of the Power BI dashboard you'd like to display in Elate.

  • To find your dashboard's Embed URL, login to your Power BI account. Select the "File" menu for reports in the upper left-hand corner and then select "Embed" (shown below). There will then be a pop out asking you to select where you are wishing to embed the report. Select "Website or Portal". This will open a dialog box that provides a link and an HTML snippet for you to use to embed your report. Copy the link provided.

  • Navigate back to Elate and paste the copied embed link into "Embed URL".

  • More instructions on this are available through Power BI here.

Hit the blue Submit button when you are done entering the information. The Power BI Scorecard will now be embedded as a scorecard in Elate. The viewer permissions set in Power BI (or another embedded tool) will also be honored in Elate.

Embedding an Individual Key Result Outcome to a Scorecard from Power BI

If you want to embed a single key result from Power BI instead of embedding a whole dashboard, you are able to embed in an outcome! Please note that embedding a single metric from Power BI will require your Power BI dashboard to only have one metric. You may need to create a Power BI dashboard with only one metric on it to ensure you are only embedding the single metric, and not accidentally embedding an entire dashboard view into Elate.

To embed a Power BI key result, navigate to the scorecard you want to add it to. This can be an team or main company scorecard. From here, you can select the blue +Add button in the top right and select New Outcome.

A modal will open prompting you to name your outcome, assign ownership, and select your visual. Since you're embedding a key result, the chart you choose here does not matter but we like to use the bar chart.

Once you have entered all the necessary information, click the blue Create button in the bottom right corner of the modal. Your outcome will now appear on the scorecard. To embed, click the 3 dot menu in the top right corner of your outcome and select Embed Chart.

You will then be prompted to select the embed source with a dropdown. Once you select PowerBI, you will be prompted to enter a URL for what you are trying to embed.

Embed Key Result Information:

When embedding an individual key result to Elate, the Power BI URL structure should be the same as above.

  • Power BI URL of the dashboard you want to display in Elate.

  • In Power BI, to find this you'll click on the "File" menu for reports in Power BI and select the "Embed Report" option. This will open a pop out asking where you wish to embed the report. Select "Website or Portal". This will open a dialog that provides a link and an HTML snippet that can be used to embed the report securely. You can copy this link and paste it in the Embed URL box in Elate. You’ll need to use your portal’s embed feature or edit the web page’s HTML to add the report.

  • More instructions on this are available through Power BI here.

Once you have copied the link, click the blue Submit button in the bottom right corner. Your visual should now be populated in your outcome.

Embedding a Power BI key result on an Objective Key Result from Power BI

Embedding a Power BI key result to an objective is very similar to adding to a scorecard. To start, navigate to the desired objective.

Select the 3 dot menu in the top right corner of the outcome you want to embed.

From here, you are able to follow the same steps as above to select the source and add the embed URL. Please note you will still need to make a dashboard with just one metric on it and then use that embed URL so we're pulling in the single metric vs. an entire dashboard view.

Commonly Asked Questions on Embedding Power BI

Q: Can I still embed if I use public links?

A: Right now, our Power BI embed does not support public links. You will only be able to embed private links.

Q: If I embed a chart, will everyone be able to see it?

A: Your Power BI permissions still stand with the embed in Elate. Since we are just embedding what you have in Power BI, even if someone has an Elate account they would need to have the correct Power BI permissions to see the embedded information.
