v3 - Google Analytics Integration

Integrate Google Analytics (GA4) into your online booking portal to measure its traffic: what it is, requirements, step-by-step setup, field explanation, correct measurement, privacy, FAQs and best practices.

Index

What is this integration?

The Google Analytics integration adds the Google Analytics (GA4) tracker to your online booking portal (the customer zone where your players book). From that point on, your customers' visits and navigation on the portal are recorded in your Google Analytics account, where you can analyze them in full detail.

Enabling it is very simple: you only need to enter the identifier (ID) of your Google Analytics property in your customer zone settings. It requires no development and no editing of your website's code.

Google Analytics is Google's free tool for measuring a website's traffic: how many people visit it, where they come from, which pages they view, which devices they use and how they behave. It is one of the most widely used web analytics tools in the world.

In line with our commitment to digitalization, Golfmanager is adapted to the current version of Google Analytics (GA4), so that your club can keep collecting data from its booking portal without interruptions and use it to maximize sales.

What problem does it solve?

  • Know how your customers use the portal: visits, most viewed pages, devices and origin.

  • Measure your marketing campaigns: which traffic sources (social media, Google, email…) bring more bookings.

  • Track online traffic and conversions, extremely valuable data to make decisions and increase sales.

  • Make data-driven decisions about the portal experience instead of relying on intuition.

  • No development: it is enabled with a single value, without touching any code.

Which systems does it connect and in which direction does the data travel?

It connects your online booking portal with Google Analytics:

  • When a customer navigates the portal, it sends navigation data (page views, events) to Google Analytics.

  • The data accumulates in your Google Analytics account, where you review the reports.

It is a one-way transfer (from the portal to Google Analytics). Google Analytics does not send data back to Golfmanager, and the analytics data is not mixed with your club's database.

🔔 Important: the migration to Google Analytics 4 (GA4)

Google replaced its previous version, Universal Analytics, with Google Analytics 4 (GA4). As of July 1, 2024, Universal Analytics properties stopped collecting data, so GA4 is now the only version that works.

What does this mean for you?

  • If you are still using an old Universal Analytics identifier (format UA-XXXXXXX), it no longer collects data and you must replace it with a GA4 one (format G-XXXXXXXXXX).

  • Golfmanager is already adapted to GA4, so you only need to make sure you have a GA4 property created and paste its ID in the settings (see below).

⚙️ If you have not migrated to GA4 yet, we recommend following Google's migration guide as soon as possible so your measurements keep working. It is a process carried out in your Google account, unrelated to Golfmanager.

Prerequisites (before enabling the integration)

  1. Have a Google Analytics account with a GA4 property created.

  2. Have the measurement ID of that property (format G-XXXXXXXXXX).

  3. Have the Google Analytics module enabled in your Golfmanager (if the settings section does not appear, contact support to enable it).

  4. Permissions to edit the Customer Zone settings in Golfmanager.

How to get your Google Analytics measurement ID

The value you need to paste in Golfmanager is the measurement ID of your GA4 property, which has the format G-XXXXXXXXXX. To find it:

  1. Go to your Google Analytics account at analytics.google.com.

  2. Select the GA4 property corresponding to your booking portal.

  3. Click Admin (the gear icon, bottom left).

  4. In the Data collection and modification section, select Data streams.

  5. Select the Web data stream corresponding to your portal.

  6. Copy the measurement ID shown in the top right (format G-XXXXXXXXXX).

💡 To verify the code (optional): you can install the Google Tag Assistant extension in your Chrome browser and check your customer zone portal (for example https://eu.golfmanager.com/xxxxxx/consumer/, replacing xxxxxx with your tenant name). Tag Assistant tells you which Google tags are loading and whether they work correctly.

How to set it up in Golfmanager (step by step)

Location: Main Menu > Customer Zone Settings > Google section

  1. Go to the Main Menu in Golfmanager.

  2. Open Customer Zone Settings (the settings of your online booking portal).

  3. Find the Google section.

  4. In the Google Analytics ID field, paste the measurement ID you copied earlier (format G-XXXXXXXXXX).

  5. Save the changes.

  6. Open your booking portal (consumer) in the browser and check that it loads and works normally.

⚠️ Very important: if the code is entered incorrectly (with spaces, extra characters or a wrong format), the booking portal may stop working. For this reason, always check the consumer booking site after adding or changing the code. If you notice any problem, go back to the settings, correct or delete the value and save again.

From that moment on, the portal will start sending data to your Google Analytics account automatically.

The configuration field in detail

This integration is controlled by a single field. It is explained in depth below:

• Field name: Google Analytics ID

• Description: This is the box where you enter the measurement ID of your Google Analytics 4 property (format G-XXXXXXXXXX). It is the value that connects your booking portal with your Google Analytics account. It is located in Main Menu > Customer Zone Settings > Google section.

• Impact on the system: When this field contains a valid ID, Golfmanager automatically inserts the Google Analytics tracker into every page of the online booking portal (consumer). It does not affect the admin panel or the POS. If the field is empty, the portal works the same but nothing is measured. If it contains an incorrect value, in addition to not measuring, the portal may fail to load correctly.

• Usage example: you enter G-AB12CD34EF in the Google Analytics ID field and save.

  • What happens when it is used: from the moment you save, every customer visit to the booking portal is recorded in your Google Analytics account. You will be able to see in your reports how many people enter, from which devices and sources, which screens they visit and how they progress through the booking process.

  • System behavior: when the portal loads, Golfmanager adds Google's official script (gtag) configured with your ID. The customer's browser starts sending navigation events to Google Analytics. The process is transparent to the customer and does not noticeably slow down the portal.

ℹ️ Do not confuse it with Google Tag Manager. Golfmanager offers a separate integration for Google Tag Manager, with its own field (Google Tag Manager ID) and a different format (GTM-XXXXXX). They are different things: for Google Analytics 4 use the Google Analytics ID field with the G-XXXXXXXXXX format.

How to measure the portal correctly (enhanced measurement)

The booking portal is a single-page application (it changes screen without reloading the full page). So that Google Analytics records all screens and not just the first one, enable in GA4 the measurement of page changes based on browser history:

  1. Open Google Analytics.

  2. Click Admin (gear icon).

  3. In Data collection and modification, select Data streams.

  4. Select the Web data stream.

  5. Under Enhanced measurement, slide the toggle to On to enable the options.

  6. Click the settings icon (gear) to edit the individual options.

  7. Under Page views, click Show advanced settings.

  8. Make sure to enable both page loads and page changes based on browser history events.

  9. Save the changes.

You can check Google's official guide on single-page applications for more detail.

How it is used day to day

There is nothing to do in Golfmanager: once configured, the data is collected on its own. To analyze it, go to your Google Analytics account and review the reports (visits, audience, acquisition, behavior, conversions…).

If you want to measure specific goals (for example, completed bookings) or the performance of your campaigns, these are configured inside Google Analytics, not in Golfmanager.

Privacy and cookies

🔒 Google Analytics uses cookies to measure traffic. If you operate in the European Union or other regions with data protection regulations, make sure you comply with your obligations (cookie information and, where applicable, the user's consent) according to your privacy policy. The responsibility for complying with your country's regulations lies with the club.

Limitations to keep in mind

  • It measures the customer's online booking portal, not the admin panel or the POS.

  • The reports are in Google Analytics, not inside Golfmanager.

  • It needs a GA4 property and its correct measurement ID (the old UA-XXXXXXX ones no longer work).

  • Advanced configuration (goals, conversions, audiences) is done in Google Analytics.

  • It involves cookies and privacy regulations (see previous section).

  • It is a Google tool unrelated to Golfmanager: its internal workings and reports depend on Google.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to pay anything to use Google Analytics?

No. Google Analytics is a free tool from Google. The integration in Golfmanager also has no additional cost as long as the module is enabled in your plan.

Do I need technical knowledge to enable it?

No. You only need to copy your measurement ID from Google Analytics and paste it into the corresponding field in Golfmanager. No code is involved.

Where do I see the data that is collected?

Always in your Google Analytics account, not inside Golfmanager. Golfmanager only handles sending the data; the analysis and reports are in Google.

I configured the ID but no visits are recorded in Google Analytics. Why?

The most common cause is that the ID is missing or copied incorrectly. Check that the measurement ID (G-XXXXXXXXXX) is written correctly, without spaces or extra characters, and that it corresponds to the right GA4 property. Also check that the Google Analytics module is enabled.

Only the first screen of the portal is recorded, not the following ones. What do I do?

The portal is a single-page application, so you need to enable in GA4 the enhanced measurement and, under "Page views", the page changes based on browser history. You have the steps in the section "How to measure the portal correctly".

The data takes time to appear in the reports. Is that normal?

Yes. Google Analytics processes most reports with some delay (it can take hours). To check instantly that traffic is arriving, use the "Realtime" report in Google Analytics.

My own team's visits appear in the data and distort it. How do I remove them?

Configure internal traffic filters in Google Analytics to exclude your club's visits (for example, by IP address). This is done inside Google Analytics.

What format does the ID have and how do I know it is correct?

The Google Analytics 4 one has the format G-XXXXXXXXXX. If your identifier starts with UA- it is from the old version (Universal Analytics), which no longer works; if it starts with GTM- it is from Google Tag Manager, which is a different integration.

Can I use Google Tag Manager instead of Google Analytics?

Yes. Golfmanager has a separate integration with Google Tag Manager, with its own field (Google Tag Manager ID, format GTM-XXXXXX). They are separate settings; you can use one, the other or both depending on your needs.

The booking portal stopped working right after I entered the code. What happened?

Almost certainly the ID was entered in an incorrect format. Go back to Customer Zone Settings > Google, correct or delete the value in the Google Analytics ID field, save and check the portal again.

Does this integration also measure the admin panel or the POS?

No. It measures only the online booking portal (consumer) used by your customers. The admin panel and the POS are not included.

Can I measure completed bookings or conversions?

Yes, but defining goals and conversions is done inside Google Analytics, not in Golfmanager. Once the portal data is received, you can create the events and conversions you need there.

Do I need a cookie notice or banner?

Google Analytics uses cookies, so, depending on your country's regulations (for example, in the European Union), you will most likely need to inform and, where applicable, request consent. It is the club's responsibility to comply with the applicable regulations.

How do I quickly check that it is measuring correctly?

Open your booking portal in the browser and, at the same time, look at the "Realtime" report in Google Analytics: you should see yourself reflected as an active visit. You can also use the Google Tag Assistant extension to verify that the tag loads.

Does Golfmanager provide support on Google Analytics?

Google Analytics is a tool unrelated to Golfmanager, so its internal configuration depends on Google. Even so, our support team is available to help you as much as possible; write to us through the blue bubble in your management software.

Recommended best practices

  • Check that it is measuring with the realtime report right after configuring it.

  • Always review the consumer portal after adding or changing the ID, to make sure it still works.

  • Enable page-change measurement in GA4 to record the entire portal journey.

  • Exclude internal traffic from your team so as not to distort the data.

  • Comply with the cookie and privacy regulations of your country.

  • Define goals and conversions in Google Analytics to measure what really matters (bookings, registrations…).

  • Use a GA4 property (the UA- identifiers no longer collect data).
