Sign-in and Profile questions

Customize the questions you ask members to complete when signing up, and completing their profile in your community. Ask questions that will help users get to know one another, search for new connections, and aid you in understanding your community makeup and demographics.

Sign-up questions

You choose which questions are asked at sign-up from Members → Sign-Up & Onboarding Forms. Email, name, and job title and company are always asked, as they are the mandatory identifiers that build a member's profile. The other preset questions and any custom questions are up to you — see Onboarding form and building profile questions for the steps.

Note: These are not applicable if using external single-sign-on (SSO) that is not Gradual.

Email: The unique identifier in Gradual is the member’s email address, so that field is mandatory. Email addresses are hidden on the front end to protect users and encourage engagement and connection within Gradual.

Because an email address stands as the unique identifier of a member, if a member wants to change their email address, a new profile must be created for them with that email address or the Gradual team can make the change on the back end.

Name: First Name and Last Name are required fields for signing up, but can be translated to 'user name' if needed.

Preferred nickname can be added as an optional question, too.

Job title & Company: Job title and company are required fields for signing up that round out the users' initial profile.

We also suggest including their LinkedIn URL as an optional sign-up field to encourage connection and outreach — add it from Members → Sign-Up & Onboarding Forms.

Profile Questions

Completing their profile is the second step in member onboarding.

Reminder: Users can see and engage with some components of your community before onboarding, or completing their profile, but must fill out all mandatory fields to message other members, chat in events, comment on content, post in forum, and connect over video in events, roundtables, and networking matches.

You can control whether attendees must complete onboarding steps before joining or interacting with events. You can require users to complete their profile before they are allowed to join or engage with an event through Chat, Q&A, and Polls.

  • Requirements can be configured per event type

  • Use the toggle controls to:

    • Require profile completion before joining or interacting

    • Allow access without profile completion, if onboarding is optional

If enabled, members without complete or confirmed profiles will be prompted with the profile completion pop-up when joining virtual events.

As the community admin, you can add as many or as few questions in the profile as you’d like, make only certain questions required, and structure them so members can learn more about each other, and you, about your members!

For single-select and multi-select profile questions, you can also use Question Logic to show follow-up questions based on a member's answer. Follow-up questions stay hidden until the matching answer is selected. If a member changes their answer so a follow-up question is no longer shown, their earlier answer to that hidden question is kept. The member no longer sees it, but it is still included in member exports.

Subcommunity Profile Questions

If you are utilizing subcommunities or groups, you can ask unique questions to members of each subcommunity. Gather information about the subgroup that's different from the parent community, and is more applicable to the members of the subcommunity.

You can also ask the same questions in both communities. When a member of the parent community signs up for a linked subcommunity, the basic details they have already given are carried over so they don't have to enter them again: their email, first and last name, profile picture, and job title and company.

  • Only those details are carried over. Everything else is entered again in the subcommunity, including the answers to your custom questions.

  • Profile edits made later are not synced between communities. When a member updates an answer in one community, only that community's profile changes.
