Klarna 3-instalment payments: who bears the risk?

Understand who bears the risk with Klarna 3-instalment payments.

Written by Manon Carneiro

When a member chooses to pay in 3 interest-free instalments via Klarna, you receive the full payment immediately. Klarna assumes the credit risk entirely.

How it works

  1. The member selects Pay in 3 at checkout.

  2. Klarna pays the full order amount immediately — just like a standard card payment.

  3. Klarna manages the 3 monthly collections directly with the member.

If the member doesn't pay, that's Klarna's problem, not yours. Your cash flow is never exposed.

What this means for you

  • ✅ No non-payment risk — you're paid in full at the time of the order.

  • ✅ No collections to manage — Klarna handles everything in case of non-payment.

  • ✅ Free for members — instalment payment costs nothing for buyers, which can remove a purchase barrier.

  • ✅ No additional fees for you — Klarna service fees are included in your transaction fees.

What if a member disputes a payment? Klarna handles credit-related disputes. For merchandise disputes (product not received, non-conforming), the usual rules apply.

A member has an issue with their Pay in 3 payment?

The member needs to contact Klarna directly. This isn't a lack of service on your part — it's simply how instalment payments work.

  • The contract is between the member and Klarna — neither you, the club, nor your platform is a party to it.

  • Klarna can't share anything with you — for privacy reasons, Klarna won't disclose information about the member's account or instalments, and won't change anything at your request.

  • Your payment isn't affected — you're paid in full as soon as the order is confirmed, whatever happens afterwards between the member and Klarna.

Tip: if a member reaches out to you, point them to their Klarna app or the Klarna help centre. They'll find the details of their instalments there and can open a request in just a few clicks.
