Keep your Inbox clean

Updated over 7 months ago

With the "full message history" feature enabled in Guide, your inbox can get cluttered quickly. This article shows you how to create a Google filter that automatically declutters your inbox by marking these Guide message copies as "read" and archiving them upon arrival.

Here's why this is helpful:

  • Reduced Inbox Clutter: Instead of unread emails for messages you sent, this filter keeps your Inbox streamlined.

  • Easy Access: Even though they're archived, the messages are still searchable within your email.

  • Full conversational context: When viewing your messages conversations in your email inbox, you'll see the full message history.

Ready to get started? Here's a video overviewing the process, or follow along with the text instructions below.

Creating the Google filter:

  • Open your Gmail settings. Click the gear icon in the top right corner and select "See all settings."

  • Navigate to the Filters and Blocking tab. Click on the "Filters and Blocking" tab.
Create a new filter. Click on the "Create a new filter" button.
Define your filter criteria. In the "Has the words" field enter

    • GmailFilterTag:GuideContinuityNotification
    • You can leave the other fields blank

    • Here's what it should look like:

  • Select "Create filter". Select the following checkboxes:

    • ✔️ Skip the Inbox (Archive it)

    • ✔️ Mark as read

  • Click "Create filter." Now, any future messages from Guide will be automatically marked as read and archived, keeping your Inbox clean and organized.

Congratulations! You've successfully created a filter to manage your Guide messages in Gmail.

Additional tips:

  • You can modify this filter in the future. Go back to the "Filters and Blocking" tab in your Gmail settings and find the filter you created. You can then edit the criteria or delete it entirely.

  • This filter only affects future messages. Any existing Guide messages in your Inbox will need to be archived manually.
