Enabling Credit Card Surcharge

Updated over 3 weeks ago

⏳ Notice Requirement for Surcharging

Before enabling credit card surcharging, you’ll need to provide advance notice.

Card network rules require that you give at least 30 days’ notice to:

  • Your customers, and

  • Your payment processor

Because of this, surcharging cannot be turned on the same day. Be sure to plan ahead and allow enough time to communicate the change and complete any required setup.

If you’re interested in enabling credit card surcharging, please reach out to payments@haulerhero.com and our team will help guide you through the process.

Providing clear notice helps ensure compliance and gives your customers time to adjust to the new payment option.

Prior to enabling credit card surcharges double check local laws. These surcharges are not permitted in all 50 states and the amount you are allowed to charge varies based on local laws. Surcharges cannot be applied to transactions when the cardholder is paying with a Signature Debit, PIN Debit, PINless Debit, or Prepaid card.

⚠️ Important: Credit Card Surcharging Compliance

There are important regulations to be aware of when using credit card surcharging.

Surcharging is only permitted on credit card transactions. It cannot be applied to debit cards or ACH payments, even though those payment types may still incur processing fees. This restriction is enforced under federal law (Durbin Amendment, part of the Dodd-Frank Act).

With surcharging enabled, the system will only apply the fee to credit card payments—not debit or ACH.

Best Practice

To ensure transparency and compliance, we recommend clearly communicating this fee to your customers. A common approach is to include an invoice note such as:

"We impose a surcharge on credit card transactions up to 3%. To avoid this fee, you may choose to pay via ACH or debit."

This helps set expectations and provides customers with alternative payment options.
