Understanding PREQUAL Categories

Prequalification questionnaires are customised to reflect the size and complexity of the contractor, so it is vital to ensure you are in the correct category.

The 4 Key Stages

  1. Register - Go to www.prequal.co.nz, select Sole Trader or Company, and answer registration questions

  2. Complete Questionnaire - Pay application fee, complete all questions using this guide, and submit for initial assessment

  3. Initial Assessment - PREQUAL Assessor reviews evidence, returns any questions that need clarification

  4. Resubmission & Final Assessment - Resubmit for final assessment

Tips for Success

Before Starting

  • Read through all assessment questions carefully.

  • Gather the relevant documents, reports, and records you’ll need.

  • Make sure the person completing the assessment understands your business operations and how to use the HazardCo system.

  • Prepare supporting evidence from your HazardCo Hub and your Health & Safety Policy documents.

  • Use the evidence checklists throughout the assessment to help guide you and make sure nothing is missed.

Answering Questions

  • Questions are autosaved and can be completed in any order

  • Yes: Provides evidence requirements

  • No: May not allow changes - could result in zero score

  • Not Applicable: Must explain why - assessor reviews reasoning

File Uploads

  • No file number limits (1-5 documents usually adequate)

  • 20MB limit per file

  • Upload only relevant sections from large documents

  • Keep evidence targeted to specific questions

Resubmission Process

  • 7 working days allowed for additional evidence

  • Read assessor feedback carefully

  • Use the HazardCo system to provide clarifying documentation
