Who Can Use Site Reminders (Geofences)?
Any HazardCo App user
Set up on each user's own device
HazardCo App Version 4.8.7+
Requires iOS 14+ or Android 10+
How Site Reminders Work
After you scan into a site, your phone requests location permissions
If you allow the required permissions then a geofence will be set on your device after scanning on site
The app will then monitor whether you've arrived at or left a site you've visited before.
When you arrive and aren't already scanned in, you get a reminder to scan in.
When you leave site and are still scanned in, you get a reminder to mark yourself as left site.
You still tap the notifications to sign in and out yourself, we just remind you.
Before you can get reminders for a site, you must scan into that site manually at least once. Site Reminders only work for sites you've already visited and scanned into.
Setting Up When You First Scan In
The first time you scan into a site with the HazardCo App, you'll be shown a short explainer about Site Reminders, then walked through the permissions your phone needs to make them work. This is how most people set Site Reminders up.
Scan into a site as usual.
On the Site Details screen, you'll see a Stop forgetting to scan in and out explainer describing how Site Reminders work. Tap Turn it on.
Your phone will ask for location access.
Finally, your phone will ask about background location. This is the permission that lets Site Reminders work when the app isn't open.
Back on the Site Details screen, you'll see confirmation that a geofence has been created for this site. Site Reminders are now active, and a geofence will be set up for every new site you scan into.
Please Note: If you tap Not now on the explainer, or if you don't grant all required permissions, the app will offer to set Site Reminders up one more time on your next scan-in. After that, you can turn them on manually using the steps below.
Setting Up Site Reminders Later
If you declined the permissions required for site reminders when initially asked during scan in, follow the steps below for your phone.
Setting Up Later on iPhone
Setting Up on Later Android
Open your phone's Settings app.
Tap Apps and find HazardCo.
Tap Permissions.
Tap Location and select Allow all the time.
How Your Location Data Is Used
Giving an app "always" access to your location feels like a lot. Here's exactly what happens with each permission.
What We Don't Do
We do not send your background location to HazardCo. It never leaves your phone.
No one you work with can see your location. No one at HazardCo can see it either.
Your location data is not used for anything other than detecting and sending scan in and out reminders.
We do not track where you go outside of entering and exiting HazardCo sites.
Background Location
Used only to detect when you arrive at or leave a site you've previously scanned into.
The check happens on your device. Your location is not stored anywhere off your phone.
Your phone's settings will label this permission as "Always" or "Allow all the time" because that's the only option that allows reminders to send in the background. It doesn't mean we're watching your location all the time.
Site List
The list of sites you've scanned into (used to set up reminders) is stored on your device.
Your scan in and scan out times themselves are already recorded in HazardCo when you tap to scan, the same as they are today. Nothing new is shared.
Turning Off Site Reminders
You can turn Site Reminders off at any time.
On iPhone
Open Settings > HazardCo.
Change Location to While Using the App or Never.
On Android
Open Settings > Apps > HazardCo > Permissions.
Change Location to Allow only while using the app or Don't allow.
Turning off location permissions stops Site Reminders. You'll still be able to scan in and out manually, as you always could.
Troubleshooting
I set up the permissions but I'm not getting reminders.
Reminders only work for sites you've scanned into before. If you're at a new site, scan in as normal, the geofence will be set up for next time.
Check the HazardCo App permissions:
Location is set to "Always" (iPhone) or "Allow all the time" (Android). "While using the app" isn't enough.
Notifications are enabled. Without it, the app can't send you notifications when you enter and exit sites.
For Project Owners
Site Reminders help you get more accurate scan in and scan out times across your sites, but only when the workers on your projects have set them up on their own phones. There's no way for you to enable them globally, it has to be enabled on each workers device. To help your team benefit from Site Reminders, you might:
Let your team know about the Site Reminders feature
Share this article with your workers and contractors
Add a note to your site noticeboard encouraging workers to turn Site Reminders on
