Soaking For Health & Wellness

The aim of these treatments may be to enhance the immune system, stimulate circulatory processes including lymph and blood circulation, accelerate cell activity, dilate tissue and vessels, and activate the self-healing potential naturally.*

For centuries the benefits of therapeutic bathing have been recognized for the ability to relieve pain and improve the general well being of the body and spirit. In fact, balneotherapy is one of the oldest of medical procedures, well known and widely regarded throughout Europe and Asia.*

Over the past four centuries, the science of balneotherapy has evolved into a medical specialty in Europe and Japan, where special courses in balneotherapy are offered to both physicians and nurses by major medical schools.*

Balneotherapy, the art of water therapy, is one of aromatherapy’s best friends, providing a perfect way for essential oils to enter the body for healing. Water is nature’s greatest and most effective solvent. It acts as a liquid suspension, carrying a variety of minerals and chemicals (essential oils).*

When we immerse our bodies or feet in a warm bath, our skin rapidly begins to absorb chemicals that are suspended in the water. These chemicals can make their way into our bloodstream in as little as 2 to 15 minutes. It will take a normally healthy person from ½ hour to 3 hours to eliminate most of these chemicals through the expired breath and urine. In unhealthy or obese people, this process may take up to 10 hours. This is why adding essential oils to a bath is such an effective aromatherapy treatment.*

Healing Waters

Over the several hundred years during which science of medical balneotherapy has developed, physicians have been able to identify the health conditions that can best be treated by healing waters. The following List of indications for balneotherapy is based on the research of Yuko Agishi, MD.*

  • Chronic rheumatic diseases*

  • Functional recovery of central and peripheral neuroparalysis*

  • Metabolic diseases, especially diabetes, obesity, and gout*

  • Chronic gastrointestinal diseases*

  • Circulatory diseases, especially moderate to mild hypertension*

  • Peripheral circulatory diseases (affecting the hands and feet)*

  • Chronic Skin Diseases*

  • Psychosomatic and stress-related diseases*

  • Autonomic nervous system dysfunction*

  • Vibration disorders (middle ear disorders affecting balance)*

  • Sequela of (conditions resulting from) trauma*

  • Chronic gynecological diseases

Benefits Of Bathing

Bathing or immersing in mineral waters, essential oils, and herbal extracts is a powerful cure.* Such soaks, when taken frequently, can stimulate lymphatic drainage, increase metabolism, keep excess weight off, and eliminate toxins from the body, helping to reduce cellulite.*

With repeated use (10 to 12 soaks), typically over a three-to-four week period, bath therapy may do the following* :

  • Balance the endocrine and autonomic nervous systems*

  • Increase body temperatures*

  • Destroy germs and viruses*

  • Increase blood circulation and cell oxygenation*

  • Dissolve and eliminate toxins*

  • Increase metabolism*

  • Aid digestion*

  • Relax the body and mind*

  • Stimulate the immune system*

  • Increase endorphin (“feel good”) hormone production*

Water Temperature Guidelines

Different balneotherapy bath temperatures can be used to promote the desired effect.*

Muscle and Joint Soothing Bath: Temperature ranges between 104 to 107 degrees Fahrenheit. Soak time is 5 to 15 minutes. Use after intense physical exertion or after a very stressful day. A person must be healthy enough for this very hot bath.*

Detox Bath: Temperature ranges between 100 and 104 degrees Fahrenheit. Soak time is 8 to 15 minutes. This bath may help with increased body temperature, increased metabolism, increased white blood cell activity, induced sweating, cleansing, and detoxifying.*

Relaxing Bath: Temperature ranges between 98.6 and 102 degrees Fahrenheit. Soak time is 10 to 20 minutes. This bath is meant to be relaxing, to relieve stress, and to prepare the body for sleep.*

Tonic Bath: Ideal temperature is around 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit (body temperature). The primary purpose of this bath is to relieve physical fatigue, stimulate the body, and absorption of nutrients and bath additives. According to Maurice Mességué, tonic baths are an essential part of the treatment of various disorders through osmosis.*

Fulvic Acid

Long before mankind, the earth was blessed with ideal organic growing conditions. Exceptionally fertile soil, teeming with microbes and a wealth of minerals and trace elements, supported abundant, lush vegetation, as evidenced by ancient remains we now know were formed into coal and oil deposits. Other remains, called humic deposits, also came from that ancient lush vegetation. Humic deposits did not turn to coal or oil because they were not exposed to the same tremendous pressures; they were very near the surface where there was abundant microbial activity. Humic deposits can be found in various parts of the world, and are exceedingly rich in fulvic acid.*

A vital acid that provides many benefits for both plants and animals, fulvic acid can be found in healthy soils, large bodies of water, sediments, deposits of peat, and occasionally in outcroppings of rocks and coal. The particles making up fulvic acid are elemental ions, the basic building blocks of all matter. Acting as a go-between by converting inorganic substances into their organic, bio-available form, fulvic acid plays a huge role in transporting nutrients in and out of cells for both plant and animal life. It balances cellular electrolytes and “digests” inorganic compounds, thereby facilitating the biological removal of waste.*

Our Fulvic Acid comes from one of the richest known sources of fulvic minerals in the world and is extracted using a cold process to preserve its mineral and nutrient-rich raw state.*

Fulvic Acid contains a remarkable array of naturally occurring micronutrients including* :

  • 70+ trace minerals*

  • Vitamins*

  • Amino acids*

  • Bio-chemicals*

  • Natural antibiotics*

  • Natural antivirals*

  • Antioxidants*

  • Enzymes*

  • Organic fungicides*

  • Trace elements*

Fulvic acid’s use in wellness can be traced as far back as 15th century China with the recorded use of peat for medicinal purposes. Europeans later enjoyed mineral mud baths and salt water soaks as a wellness practice for hundreds of years. The popularity of mud and salt bathing declined due to advances in modern medicine, but research is now beginning to confirm the anecdotal evidence of thousands who reported an increase in their physical, mental, and emotional health as a result of soaking in mineral-rich waters.*

You can easily create your own spa-quality balneotherapy experience at home using our Fulvic Acid, essential oils, and a tub of water.*

Activated Charcoal

Both charcoal and activated charcoal are derived from carbon and are obtained by burning organic carbon material at very high temperatures.*

Charcoal is not a naturally occurring substance and is therefore categorized as a man-made product. It is obtained by burning wood or other organic materials at high temperatures in the absence of oxygen.*

Activated charcoal, also a man-made product, is obtained from burning carbon-rich materials like wood, coconut, sawdust, peat, or charcoal itself at very high temperatures. The charcoal powder is than burned with additional substances like chloride salts.*

Activated charcoal has a greater overall surface area, making it more porous and thereby increasing its effectiveness in filtering and adsorbing toxins in air and water. Because of this ability, activated charcoal has a variety of uses within diverse medical communities.*

Activated charcoal has been used as an antidote to many poisons and overdoses. It has been used for kidney problems, skin diseases, intestinal gas, overdoses, and even whitening teeth as well. While its toxin-adsorbing properties have a wide range of medicinal and cosmetic uses, there is not yet sufficient conclusive, large-scale research to scientifically establish the myriad benefits of activated charcoal.*

Activated charcoal is especially helpful with detoxing the body when used in balneotherapy foot soaks as the feet are truly one of the main centers of the body. Many diseases and ailments appear on the feet before anywhere else, and many people believe the body can be healed through the feet. Examples of that would include foot reflexology and the ancient practice of applying onion slices to the feet to treat a cold or the flu.*

When used in baths, foot soaks or “mud” masks, activated charcoal can draw impurities from the body and skin, moisturize skin cells, stimulate lymphatic flow and circulation, tighten pores, treat acne, heal bug bites and cuts, and balance oily skin. Activated charcoal is also great for absorbing odors, which makes it perfect for helping feet stay clean and fresh.*

HBN’s Activated Charcoal Powder can be combined with essential oils and water to create your own spa-quality detoxifying baths, foot soaks, scrubs, or masks.*

Diabetic Foot Soaks

One of the most effective balneo-foot therapies is for prevention and treatment of diabetic foot disorders. Diabetes decreases blood flow to the feet so even a small wound or blister on the feet can be slow to heal and potentially at risk for infection. This condition can escalate into more serious disorders such as gangrene, which requires amputation, or often, multiple amputations. Because many diabetics suffer from peripheral neuropathy (damage to nerves in the feet) they may not be aware of minor injuries or trauma to the tissue that can lead to increased risk for serious infections. They need to examine their feet daily for bruises, wounds, redness, blisters, ulcers, and cuts and scratches. Also, it is important to check each foot for swelling and the toes and foot for sensation.*

Since the diabetic foot is prone to dry, cracked skin which can invite infection, the diabetic foot soak with Tea Tree essential oil softens the skin and is antibacterial. Proper soaking and exfoliating the feet can allow better absorption of nutrients as well as the essential oils.*

Anti-Infectious Foot Soaks

Infected or potentially infected wounds of the feet can be complicated by the fact that shoes and feet always harbor a germ known as Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This bacteria is usually resistant to all but a few intravenous antibiotics, and serious Pseudomonas infections often require hospital treatment. Soaking in an antibacterial foot soak is a good practice for wound care of the foot.*

MRSA (methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus) is now a leading cause of problem infections of the skin and underlying soft tissue. It can cause infections ranging from superficial to deep abscesses. Once present on the skin, MRSA can be difficult to eliminate, with recurrent infections as a result. To eliminate this bacteria from the skin, nightly neck-down soaks in a tub of warm water with 1/8 teaspoon Fulvic Acid Mineral Powder are recommended for one to two weeks after a patient has an abscess drained or is treated for MRSA infection. There is often more than one family member involved, “passing it around,” so the advice is frequently directed at the entire family. This technique seems to reduce the re-infection rate significantly.*
