Understanding and Using IP Blocking

IP Blocking is a powerful feature that helps increase the accuracy of your analytics data by excluding specific users, such as your team members, from being tracked. This guide will explain what IP Blocking is, why it's important, and how to use it effectively.

What is IP Blocking?

IP Blocking allows you to exclude specific IP addresses from your heatmap analytics. This means that visits from these IP addresses won't be recorded or included in your data, giving you a more accurate picture of your actual customer behavior.

Why Use IP Blocking?

1. Improved Data Accuracy: By excluding your team members' frequent visits, you get a clearer view of genuine customer interactions.

2. One-Time Setup: Once configured, IP Blocking works automatically for all future sessions.

3. Agency-Friendly: Agencies can set this up once to exclude their team from all current and future client analytics.

How IP Blocking Works

Every device connected to the internet has an IP address. For IP Blocking, we use the IPv4 address. When a visit comes from a blocked IP, our system simply doesn't record that session in your analytics.

Setting Up IP Blocking

1. Log in to your heatmap dashboard

2. Navigate to the IP Blocking section

3. You have two options:

a. Click "Use my IP" to automatically add your current IP address

b. Manually enter an IPv4 address (you can find this at whatismyip.com)

4. Give the IP a name (e.g., "Office Network")

5. Click "Save"

That's it! Two clicks, and you're done.

Why IP Blocking Matters

Think about how often you and your team visit your website. All of these visits are currently included in your analytics, potentially skewing your data. By implementing IP Blocking, you ensure that your heatmap data reflects genuine customer behavior, allowing you to make better, more informed decisions about your website's performance and user experience.

Best Practices

- Block IPs for all office locations and remote workers

- For agencies, set this up for each client to ensure clean data across all projects

- Regularly review and update your blocked IPs, especially if your team changes locations or grows
