Filters are a feature in heatmap that allow you to customize and drill down on specific types of users, offering a more focused data set to analyze. Pre-built filters address common scenarios, while Custom Filters enable you to make an infinite number of filters to find your exact types of users to analyze.

Why Use Filters?

Filters enable actionable insights by helping you understand the specific behaviors of highly segmented user groups. For example, you can:

  • Identify high-value traffic sources.

  • Analyze the behavior of users from a specific marketing campaign.

  • Separate data for new and returning visitors to identify differences in engagement or conversion rates.

Using filters streamlines decision-making by focusing on the metrics that matter most to your business objectives.

How to Use Filters

Accessing the filters within your heatmap is available in the main header navigation bar.

  • Navigate to the header and click “Apply Filter.”

  • Choose from prebuilt options under the session data or ecommerce data sections

  • If you do not see the filter you need, you can scroll to the Custom Filters section and select “Add Custom”

You can always access your custom filters next time you need to apply another filter.

When to Use Filters: Scenarios for Smarter Analysis

Filters can highlight new vs. returning visitors, traffic sources, or even behavior from specific campaigns. Some common use cases are:

  • To analyze traffic from a specific email campaign.

  • To identify patterns among returning customers who engage more deeply with your site.

  • When troubleshooting poor performance in a specific region or device type.
