Getting Started
What are pop-up surveys?
Pop-up surveys are on-site questionnaires that appear to visitors while they browse your website. They allow you to collect feedback, understand user intent, and gather insights about the visitor experience in real-time.
How do I create my first pop-up survey?
Navigate to the Surveys section in your Heatmap.com dashboard, click "Create Survey," and choose "Pop-up Survey." You'll be guided through selecting your survey type, customizing questions, and setting display rules.
What types of pop-up surveys can I create?
Heatmap.com supports several survey types including exit-intent surveys, NPS (Net Promoter Score) surveys, customer satisfaction surveys, micro-surveys, and custom feedback forms. Each type is optimized for different use cases and visitor journeys.
Implementation & Technical Setup
Do I need to install additional code for pop-up surveys?
No additional code is required. Pop-up surveys work through your existing Heatmap.com tracking script. Once you create and activate a survey, it will automatically appear to visitors based on your targeting rules.
Will pop-up surveys slow down my website?
Pop-up surveys are designed to load asynchronously and have minimal impact on page performance. The survey content loads after your page has rendered, ensuring your site speed remains unaffected.
Can I preview surveys before making them live?
Yes, you can preview surveys in the editor under “Interactive Preview” to see exactly how they'll appear to visitors without affecting your data or showing surveys to actual users.
Are pop-up surveys mobile-responsive?
All pop-up surveys automatically adapt to different screen sizes and devices. The interface is optimized for desktop, tablet, and mobile experiences to ensure high completion rates across all devices.
Is there a limit to how many surveys I can create?
There’s no limit to how many surveys you can create; however, you can only publish one pop-up survey at a time.
Targeting & Display Rules
How do I control when and where surveys appear?
Currently, the survey will pop up on the first landing page your user visits and will not be shown again if answered or exited out.
Can I show different surveys to different audience segments?
Currently, it’s not possible to segment pop-up surveys to different audience groups.
Can I trigger surveys based on specific user actions?
Yes, you can trigger surveys based on events like initial page load, percentage of scroll depth, delayed time on page, or exit intent tracked through your implementation.
Survey Design & Customization
Can I customize the appearance of my surveys?
You have the ability to change colors, fonts, and button styles. Surveys can match your website's design system to create a seamless experience.
What question types are available?
Heatmap.com supports multiple question types including multiple choice, rating scales, open-ended text responses, single choice, and multi-select checkboxes.
How many questions can I include in a pop-up survey?
To follow best practices, you’ll have the ability to ask one question in the pop-up survey.
Data & Analysis
Where can I view survey responses?
All responses are available in the Surveys section of your dashboard. You can view individual responses under the specific survey you’d like to analyze.
How quickly does survey data appear in my dashboard?
Survey responses appear in real-time. As soon as a visitor submits a survey, the data is immediately available in your dashboard and reports.
Can I export survey results?
Yes, you can export survey data as CSV or PDF. Exports include all response data, timestamps, and associated metadata like device type and traffic source.
Privacy & Compliance
Do surveys collect personal information?
Surveys only collect the information you explicitly request in your questions. Heatmap.com does not automatically collect personally identifiable information.
Can visitors opt out of surveys?
Yes, all surveys include a close button, and visitors can dismiss them at any time.
Best Practices
What's a good response rate for pop-up surveys?
Response rates vary by survey type and implementation, but typical rates range from 2% to 15%. Exit-intent surveys and short micro-surveys typically achieve higher response rates than lengthy forms.
When is the best time to show a survey?
Timing depends on your goals. Exit-intent surveys work well for understanding why visitors are leaving. Mid-session surveys after 30-60 seconds can capture feedback from engaged users. Post-action surveys after purchases or form submissions gather timely insights.
How can I increase survey completion rates?
Keep surveys short, make questions clear and specific, explain why you're asking for feedback, offer incentives when appropriate, ensure mobile optimization, and avoid interrupting critical user flows like checkout processes.
Should I offer incentives for completing surveys?
Incentives can increase response rates but may affect response quality. Consider your goals: if you need volume, incentives help. If you want feedback from genuinely engaged users, surveys without incentives often yield more thoughtful responses.
Troubleshooting
My survey isn't appearing on my website. What should I check?
Verify that your Heatmap.com tracking script is installed correctly and the survey is set to "Published" status. If you’re still running into issues, please reach out to Customer Support at support@heatmap.com.
Can surveys conflict with my website's pop-ups or chat widgets?
Heatmap.com surveys are designed to play nicely with other on-site tools. You can adjust z-index values and positioning to ensure surveys don't overlap with existing elements.
How do I stop a survey from displaying?
You can pause or deactivate any survey from the dashboard by clicking the three dots and selecting “Unpublished.” Paused surveys stop displaying immediately but retain all existing data and settings for later reactivation.
Why are my response rates lower than expected?
Low response rates can result from surveys appearing too quickly, being too long, having unclear questions, poor targeting, appearing on mobile devices without optimization, or showing too frequently to the same visitors. Review your survey design and targeting settings.
