Setting up progressive gifts

Learn how to add progressive gifts to your bundle that unlock as customers select higher-value offers, rewarding them with free products and free shipping.

Progressive gifts are rewards that unlock as customers choose higher-tier offers in your bundle. The idea is simple: the bigger the bundle the customer selects, the more gifts they unlock. A customer selecting "Buy 1" might see the gifts locked, but when they switch to "Buy 3, Save 20%," the gifts unlock and become part of their order.

This creates a visual incentive for customers to upgrade to higher tiers, directly increasing your average order value.

Progressive gifts are different from per-offer gifts (which are configured inside individual offers in the Add ons section). Progressive gifts are set up at the bundle level and appear at the bottom of the bundle widget as a dedicated section with locked and unlocked states.

To configure progressive gifts, click Progressive Gifts in the left sidebar under Customize in the bundle editor.

Enabling progressive gifts

Check the Enable progressive gifts checkbox to activate the feature. Once enabled, a progressive gifts section appears at the bottom of the bundle widget in the preview panel, showing gift cards in either a locked or unlocked state.

Title and subtitle

Title: The heading that appears above the progressive gifts section. Default: "Exclusive Gift:" with a 20-character limit. You can optionally make it Bold with the checkbox below.

Subtitle: The supporting text below the title. Default: "Select offer to unlock gifts" with a 30-character limit. This tells customers what they need to do to unlock the gifts. You can optionally make it Bold with the checkbox below.

💡 Keep the subtitle action-oriented. "Select offer to unlock gifts" is clear and direct. Avoid vague text like "Special bonus" that doesn't tell the customer what to do.

Adding gifts

Click Add gift to add a free gift product to the progressive gifts section. Each gift appears as a card that you can configure individually. You can add up to 4 gifts per bundle.

Click Add free shipping to add a free shipping reward instead of a physical product.

Free shipping cards appear alongside gift product cards and unlock in the same way.

You can mix gift products and free shipping rewards in any combination, as long as the total does not exceed 4.

Configuring a gift

Each gift card has the following settings:

Gift Product: Click Select to choose a product from your catalog. This is the product the customer will receive for free when the gift unlocks.

Label: The text displayed below the gift image. Default: "FREE {{original_price}}" where {{original_price}} is a placeholder that automatically inserts the product's original price. This shows customers the value of what they're getting for free (e.g., "FREE $24.99").

You can customize the label text but keep it short since space on the gift card is limited.

Product image settings: Click Add a custom image to upload your own image for the gift card instead of using the product's default image. This is useful if you want a specific lifestyle image or a "mystery gift" style graphic.

Setting unlock tiers

The Unlock at dropdown is the key setting that controls when each gift becomes available. It lists every offer in your bundle (e.g., "Buy 1," "Buy 2, Save 10%," "Buy 3, Save 20%"), and you choose which offer tier unlocks the gift.

Below the dropdown, you'll see a helper text: "Select which bundle tier unlocks this gift."

Previewing: Below the Unlock at dropdown, the Locked and Unlocked toggle lets you preview how the gift card looks in each state directly in the editor. This is a preview tool only and does not affect the actual gift behavior. The gift's lock/unlock state on your live store is determined entirely by the Unlock at setting and which offer the customer has selected.

Example setup:

  • Gift 1: Unlock at "Buy 1" (available from the first tier)

  • Gift 2: Unlock at "Buy 2, Save 10%" (unlocks when the customer selects the second tier or higher)

  • Gift 3: Unlock at "Buy 3, Save 20%" (only unlocks at the highest tier)

  • Free shipping: Unlock at "Buy 2, Save 10%" (ships free from the second tier up)

💡 Stagger your gifts across tiers to create a ladder effect. Customers who are on the fence about upgrading from "Buy 2" to "Buy 3" are much more likely to upgrade when they can see an additional gift waiting to be unlocked.

How customers experience progressive gifts

From the customer's perspective, the progressive gifts section appears at the bottom of the bundle widget. Here's what they see:

  1. When they first load the page, some gifts may appear locked (greyed out with a lock icon) and others may be unlocked, depending on which offer is set as the default.

  2. As they click different offer tiers, the gifts dynamically lock and unlock in real time. This visual change is immediate and creates a satisfying sense of reward.

  3. Unlocked gifts show the product image, the label (e.g., "FREE $24.99"), and are visually highlighted. Locked gifts appear faded with a lock icon, signaling that a higher tier is needed to claim them.

  4. When the customer adds the bundle to their cart, all unlocked gifts are automatically included in the order.

ℹ️ When a customer adds a bundle with unlocked progressive gifts to their cart, the gift products are included in the order. Make sure your gift products are properly set up in Shopify so they can be fulfilled correctly.

Gift limits

You can add a maximum of 4 gifts per bundle. This includes both gift products and free shipping rewards combined. For example, you could have 3 gift products and 1 free shipping reward, or 2 of each, or any other combination that totals 4 or fewer.

If you need to remove a gift to make room for a new one, click the trash icon on the gift card you want to delete.

You can reorder gifts using the up/down arrows on each gift card, which changes the display order customers see.

Progressive gifts colors

The visual appearance of the progressive gifts section (locked and unlocked states, borders, backgrounds, text colors) is configured in the Colors tab under "Progressive gifts colors." See Customizing your bundle appearance for the full list of settings.
