FAQs on Stock Transfer

Updated today

Who should initiate the process?

The transfer must be initiated by the receiving broker, meaning the platform you want to migrate or change your assets to. If you want to bring your assets to Vest, we take care of the process; if instead you want to take your assets to another Broker, the process must be initiated by them.

How long does the process take?

The process can take 7 to 10 business days; the days can start counting after the transfer request is signed, which is the document with which you authorize the assets to be moved from one Broker to another.

What happens to my account and my assets during the transfer?

Your account is frozen by the clearing firm or custodian during the transfer process, this is to prevent sales or withdrawals that could cause the transfer to be rejected. Remember to avoid movements in the account once you have signed the transfer request.

Once the process is started, you must wait up to 10 business days to see your positions on the receiving Broker's platform.

In case of a full transfer, the account is closed automatically; if it is a partial transfer, you will be able to access your account without problem once the transfer is completed.

What is the cost of an ACAT?

The cost of the transfer is generated by the clearing firm or custodian; it will depend on who the Broker you are moving the assets to uses for the custody process.

The cost generated by DriveWealth, our custodian, for ACAT transfers is $65 USD.

The cost is only generated in outgoing transfers, meaning the cost is only generated by the custodian who releases the assets. The value must be available in cash in your investment account at the time of the transfer, otherwise, it is a reason for rejection.

What types of stocks can be transferred?

You can transfer whole shares that are listed on the United States stock exchange; fractional shares cannot be transferred, they must be completed or liquidated for the transfer, or it could be a reason for rejection.

Can I transfer only a part of my portfolio?

Yes, you can make a partial transfer of your portfolio. In the request, you specify the assets and the amount you want to transfer, and that's it.

What happens if I have the Securities Lending (FPSL) activated?

You must opt out of the program before initiating any transfer process; when the function is active, the shares cannot be transferred, and it is a reason for rejection.

How can I opt out of the program?

You simply must go to the application and follow this path:

  • Account Settings

  • Disable the FPSL function.

Which institution appears as the custodian of my assets?

Custody at Vest is done through DriveWealth; the transfer process must be carried out directly with them. All Brokers have a custodian; to confirm yours, you can check your account agreement or with your Broker's support team.

What information do I need to complete the transfer?

The data you need is from the clearing firm or custodian; below you will find those for DriveWealth, which is our custodian.
