What does 5% profit actually mean?

We think aiming for 5% profit is a solid benchmark in hospitality - but it's totally up to you. To help you wrap your head around it, here's a couple of examples of hospitality heroes like you.

If you've been with Bustle for a year

Meet Gem ☕

Gem runs a small but mighty espresso bar. She’s been using Bustle for a year and just ran her sales report by drilling down straight from the dashboard. Turns out she's turning over about $500k (or £250k) per year.
That’s around $1,500–$2,000 a day (or £750-£1000) - across five days of trade.

If Gem makes $500k a year and wants to hit 5% profit, then:

  • $500k × 5% = $25k (£12.5K) profit to place in the goal setting tool

But this year? She’s levelling up.

With Bustle Online boosting corporate orders in the morning rush, and Loyalty just around the corner, Gem’s forecasting $550k turnover this coming year.

So now, her 5% profit goal looks like this:

  • $27,500 profit

  • Based on $550k turnover

Of course, there’s tax, GST/VAT, and real-life stuff that’ll chip away at that - but that’s why setting a goal matters. It's a starting point for smashing it.

Here’s how that breaks down for Gem week to week - and day by day:

Just getting started with Bustle?

Meet Brent from Coffee Barn
He’s setting up his café with Bustle from day one - and that means a clean slate and a whole lot of potential.

Brent doesn’t have a full year of sales to look back on just yet. Instead, he’s forecasting around $400k turnover for his first year.

So how does he figure out what kind of profit to aim for?

If Brent makes $400k a year and wants to hit 5% profit, then:

  • $400,000 × 5% = $20,000 profit

That gives him a target, and now Bustle can help him break it down into:

🗓️ His weekly turnover goal
🧮 Daily sales targets
📈 And whether he’s on track to hit them

Brent popped $20k into the goal-setting tool and instantly saw that he’d need a weekly turnover of $7,692 to get there.

It doesn’t need to be perfect - just pick a number and get moving. You can always tweak your goals as you go.
