That means you can subscribe to an API plan regardless of whether you're on the Free, Creator, Team, or Enterprise tier – giving you flexibility to choose the best options for your unique needs.

Our API plans are aimed for producing videos ( Avatar video or Translations) via API.

An API (Application Programming Interface) is a tool that lets different apps or software talk to each other seamlessly. It allows you to connect HeyGen's features directly with your own systems or applications, making it easy to create and automate even more!

This means that you can create Videos or Translations using your own platform without ever using HeyGen's platform. By connecting HeyGen's features directly with your own systems or applications, you can automate tasks and streamline workflows – saving you time and reducing manual effort! You can also use these credits to stream LiveAvatars on your site.

You can get your API key by going into Settings > Usage & Billing > HeyGen API > API token in your HeyGen account.

You cannot view your API key without re-generating it, so make sure that when you do generate it- you save it somewhere outside of HeyGen so you won't need to regenerate a different one again.

Yes! the API plans make it so you can create videos via API only, where the web based plans of Creator and Business allow you to create videos via the HeyGen platform only.

All HeyGen avatars—including UGC, Professional, Lifestyle, AI Generated, and more—are available through the API. They won't be sorted into categories, but you'll still be able to access them.

API Free Plan: All HeyGen users by default are entitled to the free API plan of 10 monthly API credits.

Live Avatar plans provide flexible, stand-alone subscription options designed exclusively for users who want access to Live Avatars. These plans operate independently from other HeyGen subscriptions and offer a more cost-effective way to use Live Avatar features without needing a broader plan. They’re ideal for anyone primarily focused on real-time avatar interactions and looking for a more economical pricing structure tailored to that specific use case.

$100 provides 1,000 LiveAvatar (LA) Credits.

Each credit gives you 30 seconds to 1 minute of streaming, depending on the integration method you use.

In contrast, API plans work very differently:

$100 gives you 100 API Credits, and each API credit equals 5 minutes of streaming time. API streaming is measured in 1-second increments, with a minimum charge of 30 seconds per session.

Overall, Live Avatar Credits are designed specifically for real-time avatar interactions, while API Credits follow a different consumption model geared toward standard API usage.

Do API credits/ LiveAvatar Credits expire?

Yes, both API credits and LiveAvatar credits expire 30 days after they’re issued, so be sure to use them within that time. If you do not think you'll have high usage at the start, we recommend testing the free version with 10 monthly credits until you have consistent usage.

I ran out of API credits this month! What do I do?

If you run out of API credits, we can cancel your current plan so you can repurchase and reload your credits.

If you're on the Scale plan or LiveAvatar Essential, you also have the option to enable auto-renew your credits. With auto-renew, once you use 90% or more of your monthly credits, HeyGen will automatically renew your plan, cancel the old one, and refill your credits to 100%. You can access this in your HeyGen API Subscription tab or LiveAvatar platform.

Similar to the Scale plan on HeyGen, LiveAvatar has the option to enable Allow Overage, which lets you keep using the API even after your credits run out. You'll be billed afterward for the extra usage.
