Frequently asked questions for Reference Check Candidates

What do I need to do?

As a candidate, all you need to do is open the invitation link that you should've received via email and enter the contact details of the people you'd like to nominate as references.

We ask for the following information about all of your references:

  • Full name

  • Email address

  • Phone number (this is optional and we only use this to send SMS reminders)

  • The name of the company you worked with the reference

  • The job title you held in the previous company

  • The dates you worked together

  • An optional personal message from you to the reference (if you'd like to give them some additional context about the role/company/reference check process).

Once you've invited your references successfully, we handle the rest by reaching out to your references for feedback and then sending the results to the company you're in the recruitment process with.

How do you contact my references?

All contact is via email or SMS/text message. We don't call any references as part of our process. Instead, we are a completely asynchronous online platform that collects information from your references about you in a structured, unbiased and secure way and then transmits this data to the hiring team who will use it for hiring & compliance purposes.

Who should I invite as my references?

This depends! When you open the candidate portal, you'll see the number and the types of references that the hiring company has requested. The options could be:

  • Manager - someone that you've reported to in the past/ currently

  • Peer - someone that you've worked alongside in the past/ currently

  • Direct Report - someone that has reported to you in the past/ currently

  • Student Peer - someone that you've studied alongside in the past/ currently

  • Client - someone that has been your client/customer in the past/currently

  • Any Relationship - in this case, it's best to stick to references that you know in a professional capacity.

All my references have responded, what are the next steps?

You'll receive an email letting you know that the process is completed and the hiring company will also receive all of the results. From here, HiPeople doesn't have any visibility or say in the next recruitment steps, so you'd need to reach out to the hiring/recruitment team at the company you're applying with for feedback.

Can I see my reference results/responses?

HiPeople is a Reference Check automation platform used by 2,000+ teams around the world as part of their hiring/ recruitment process.

Once a candidate has completed the full Reference Check process via our platform, we automatically pass the results over to the hiring/recruitment team at the company the candidate is applying/interviewing with.

HiPeople isn't able to provide the results or feedback about the Reference Check/ progress in the recruitment process, but candidates are welcome to request feedback & updates from the hiring team directly.

Due to privacy agreements, we are unable to provide candidates with contact details of the hiring/recruitment team.
