Child lock the App

Updated over a month ago

If your child has the habit of exiting the app when you need to step away, consider enabling app locking features in your device settings to limit distractions and ensure a productive learning session.

Guided Access on iPhone and iPad Devices

  1. Go to your device Settings menu > Accessibility > Guided Access > toggle the setting to On

  2. Select Passcode Settings > Set Guided Access Passcode

  3. Here you may choose to set a numerical password, Face ID, or Touch ID depending on your device model (Tip: if your child knows the password to unlock the device, you'll want to use an alternative password)

  4. When your child is ready to start their next learning session, open the Hooked on Phonics App

  5. Triple-click the physical "lock" button on the device > select Guided Access > Start

  6. Your child will now be locked into the App without the ability to exit

  7. To end Guided Access: double-click the physical "lock" button again and enter your password, Face, or Touch ID to end the session

Screen Pinning on Android Devices

  1. Go to your device Settings menu > Security and Privacy > Other Security Settings > Pin App > toggle the setting to On

  2. Toggle the “Ask for PIN before unpinning” to On

  3. By default, the device will use the preferred unlocking method already set for the device itself, whether it’s by a numerical pin, Face ID, or Touch ID (Tip: if your child knows the pin for unlocking the device, consider changing it for this method to be effective)

  4. Open the Hooked on Phonics App and swipe up to the middle of the screen and hold to select the Recents button (III at bottom left)

  5. Select the Apps icon at the top of your screen > select Pin this App

  6. To unpin the screen, follow the steps below depending on your device settings:

    • Gesture navigation: Swipe up and hold

    • 2-button Navigation: Touch and hold Back and Home

    • 3-button Navigation: Touch and hold Back and Overview

  7. Enter your PIN, Face ID, or Touch ID as requested
