Common Core Standards

Updated over a month ago

It’s always a great idea to talk with your child’s teacher about how you are using Hooked on Phonics with your family. Most teachers are thrilled to hear children are getting an additional source of reading instruction to fill in any gaps and/or provide powerful tools to get ahead. Over 5 million families and thousands of schools have used our programs for more than 35 years, and our current Hooked on Phonics programs are aligned with educational standards for all 50 states.

Common Core Standards

The Hooked on Phonics method delivers engaging, explicit, systematic phonics instruction through an approach based on current science of reading (SoR) best practices. Instruction is cumulative and organized in a sequence that enhances learning and simplifies teaching. We start with phonological and phonemic awareness, in which each individual sound of the English language is explicitly taught along with the letter(s) that represents the sound. Five phonetic skills are taught to help students recognize short and long vowel patterns in words and syllables. Decoding skills are presented to show students how to decode multisyllabic words.

Our programs systematically teach the following Common Core Reading Foundation Skills (specifically for Kindergarten):

  • Concepts of Print

  • Phonological awareness

  • Letter-Sound Correspondence

  • High-Frequency word recognition
