What Is a Smart Weight Target?

Your Smart Weight Target is a personalized calorie and macro plan built just for you.
Instead of guessing or using generic formulas, Hoot calculates your plan using trusted science—the Mifflin-St Jeor equation—then adjusts it based on your lifestyle, activity level, and goals.

It’s designed to help you lose, gain, or maintain weight safely, while staying flexible enough to fit real life.


What Data Does Hoot Use?

Your Smart Weight Target is created from a few simple details you enter when setting up your profile:

  • Current weight

  • Target weight

  • Height

  • Age

  • Gender

  • Activity level

  • Desired pace of progress (e.g., 0.5–2 lbs per week)

Hoot combines this information to estimate your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE)—the calories you burn in a day—and then sets an appropriate calorie goal for your target.


How the Math Works

Hoot’s calculations are based on the Mifflin-St Jeor formula, the gold standard in nutrition science.

  • Your calorie target starts with your daily energy needs, adjusted for activity.

  • Hoot then applies a safe calorie deficit or surplus depending on your goal.

  • Your macros are distributed using evidence-based defaults:

    • Protein: ~0.8 g per lb of body weight

    • Fat: ~30 % of total calories (with safe minimums of 30–40 g/day)

    • Carbs: The remaining calories

Hoot also includes built-in safety thresholds to protect your health:

  • Minimum 1,200 cal/day for women

  • Minimum 1,500 cal/day for men

You can manually edit your calorie or macro goals at any time if you prefer a custom setup.
