If the steps or calories burned you see in Hoot don't exactly match what Apple Health shows, don't worry -- there's usually a simple explanation.
Sync Timing
Hoot syncs your activity data from Apple Health periodically throughout the day. If you just finished a walk or workout, it may take a few minutes for the latest numbers to appear in Hoot. Try closing and reopening the app to trigger a fresh sync.
Active Energy vs. Total Energy
This is the most common source of confusion. Apple Health tracks two types of energy burn:
Active Energy -- calories burned through movement and exercise
Resting Energy -- calories your body burns at rest just to keep you functioning (breathing, digestion, circulation, etc.)
When Apple Health shows your total calories burned for the day, it combines both. Hoot shows active energy and resting energy separately so you can see exactly where your burn is coming from.
Rounding and Timing Differences
Hoot and Apple Health may calculate daily totals over slightly different time windows or rounding methods. Small differences of a few calories or a handful of steps are normal and nothing to worry about.
Multiple Data Sources
If you have more than one device or app writing steps or energy data to Apple Health (for example, both your iPhone and Apple Watch), Apple Health uses its own logic to merge and deduplicate that data. Hoot reads the result from Apple Health, so if Apple Health's number looks different from what your watch shows directly, Hoot will reflect Apple Health's merged total.
Steps Showing as Zero
If your steps aren't appearing in Hoot at all, check the following:
Make sure Apple Health is connected in Hoot Settings > Apple Health.
Make sure Hoot has permission to read Steps in iOS Settings > Health > Data Access & Devices > Hoot.
Make sure your iPhone or Apple Watch is actually recording steps (open Apple Health and check that step data is showing up there first).
