Some patients experience mild back pain or general muscle aches after taking ED medication. These symptoms are usually short-lived and resolve within 12–24 hours.
Why It Happens
ED medications increase blood flow by relaxing smooth muscle and dilating blood vessels. This vasodilation can sometimes cause:
Fluid shifts between tissues
Temporary inflammation
Increased muscle sensitivity or tension
The exact mechanism isn’t fully understood, but it’s more common with certain long-acting ED medications.
What It Feels Like
Dull ache or tightness in the lower back
Generalised muscle stiffness or fatigue
May feel similar to soreness after a workout
Typically starts a few hours after taking medication
How to Manage
Stay hydrated: Helps reduce cramping or tension.
Gentle stretching or walking: Promotes circulation and eases stiffness.
Heat pack: Can reduce tightness in lower back or legs.
Paracetamol: Usually safe and effective for temporary relief.
When to Speak With Your Doctor
If pain is moderate to severe
If symptoms occur after every dose
If over-the-counter strategies aren’t working
Your doctor may consider reducing the dose or switching medications.
Back and muscle aches are a known but uncommon side effect of ED medications. They’re usually mild and go away with hydration, light movement, or simple pain relief. Contact your doctor if symptoms persist or become bothersome.
