Classic Hose Reel - How to replace the Guidance Tooth, Cog or Feeder Arm.

This article is for a technical repair of the internal parts of the classic retractable hose reel, that drive the hose movement across the face of the unit.

Updated over a month ago

Overview

  • This document refers to replacing the guidance tooth, cog or feeder arm on the classic hose reel (not evolve model).

  • Hoselink recommends that this repair is completed in our warehouse by our technician, as the whole reel and spring tension need to be taken apart.

However, some customers may prefer to do this at home following the instructions below.

  • Customer service will need to send out a replacement part. They are not available on the website but can be bought directly from the customer service team.

Safety Precautions

Repairing the Classic Hose Reel involves handling internal components—like the spring mechanism—that store significant tension. Mishandling these parts can be dangerous. If you're uncertain about any steps, we strongly recommend that this repair is carried out by the Hoselink technician, where possible.

Always:

  • Wear protective gloves and safety goggles.

  • Keep bystanders, especially children and pets, away from the repair area.

  • Use tools carefully, and do not attempt repairs without understanding the process fully.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Ensure that you have correctly diagnosed the issue using the retraction trouble shooting guide

2. Watch this video first: How to re-assemble the hose reel

You can also consult the PDF guide for how to create a re-tensioning tool.

3. Remove Side Disc

Remove the circular side cover from the right-hand side of the hose reel. This is the side that does not have the leader hose feeding into it.

4. Release Screws

Behind the side disc, you'll see a black plate with three screws. Unscrew these first. This will release the spring, making it safe to open the reel casing.

5. Open Casing

Place the hose reel on the ground. Loosen (but do not fully remove) all screws that hold the casing together. Access these screws from the right-hand side of the casing. Once they are all loosened, carefully pull off the side cover while keeping it upright to avoid losing any screws.

6. Replace damaged Part:

Replace the Guidance Tooth

Remove the feeder arm from the reel and flip it over. Undo the four screws holding it together. Take out the broken guidance tooth and insert the replacement.

Or in the event that the feeder arm is broken, replace with the new part.

Then, re-assemble the feeder arm, ensuring the hose sits between the guides before screwing it back together.

Fully extend the hose from the casing to verify the new guidance tooth is securely in place and aligns with the grooves.

Turn the spindle clockwise until the feeder arm returns to the starting position.

Replace Cog

  • Slip off the black drive belt from the cog.

  • Fit the new cog into place

7. Fit the Black Belt

Wrap the black belt around the cog. Make sure the cog’s teeth engage correctly with the teeth on the belt.

8. Re-assemble the Casing

Re-align the casing with the hose reel and tighten all screws to secure it back in place.

9. Re-tension the Spring

Replace the black cap. You will now need to re-tension the spring. Follow the provided guide meticulously, as the spring can pose safety risks if improperly handled. Accurate tensioning is crucial for optimal functioning.
