How to create discount codes

Discounts are a great way to entice newcomers, reward your returning customers or offer discounted tickets to VIPs and members. Buyers will enter the code you create during checkout to apply their discount. Automatic discounts can be created if you don't want buyers to enter a code.

You can create multiple fixed-amount or percentage (%) discount codes that can be applied to selected - or all - ticket types. You can also restrict how many tickets can be discounted by this code per order and over its lifetime.

How to create a discount code

  1. Manage your event

  2. Head to promote > discounts on the left-hand menu

  3. Click create discount code

  4. Give your code a name
This is the code ticket buyers will enter during checkout

  5. Choose whether the discount is a percentage (%) or fixed amount

  6. Select the ticket types the code applies to

  7. Set the code usage limits

    1. Quantity refers to how many times the code can be used in total across all orders

    2. Maximum use per order refers to the maximum number of tickets in a single order that can be discounted

  8. Set a timeframe during which the discount code is valid

Discounts apply per ticket.

For example, a 10% discount code applied to an order of 4 tickets will give a 10% discount off each ticket price. If the price of tickets varies, so does the discount.

Discount codes and packaged tickets: Discounts always apply per ticket. They do not apply to a packaged ticket. For tickets sold in packages, the discount quantity still applies to individual tickets, not the package as a whole.

Packaged tickets are designed to offer a discount on a group or bundle of tickets. Choosing between packaged tickets and discount codes will depend on your event's needs.

How to create multiple discount codes by uploading a CSV

You can create discount codes en masse by uploading a CSV, rather than creating them one at a time, and it is useful for generating many unique codes for the same discount, such as for members or promoters.

For example, you could use a unique Member ID or an email address as a code name.

  1. Click create discount code / add code > select CSV upload

  2. Download the template CSV file and copy your unique discount codes > save
One row = one discount code

  3. Upload the CSV file

  4. Set up the discount amount as directed in the steps above

Your discount will apply to each code that is uploaded

If you need to upload discount codes of different values, you will need to create separate CSV files and upload them separately with the appropriate discount settings.

How do ticket buyers apply their discount code during checkout?

There are two ways to apply discount codes for ticket buyers:

OPTION 1: Enter a discount code during checkout

Buyers can use the discount code field that will appear above their ticket selection or ticket information pages to manually enter and apply their discount code.

Note: The discount will apply when a ticket is added to a buyer's cart.

OPTION 2: Use the unique companion link to automatically apply a discount

Buyers can be given a unique link that directs them to the event page AND auto-applies the discount code. They do not need to manually enter their discount code.

  1. Find your discount code on the discount codes page

  2. Copy the link next to your discount

  3. Share this link with your guests

How to track how many times a discount code has been used

  1. Select your event via the events tab

  2. Head to reports > discounts on the left-hand menu

  3. This page shows you the overall usage of each discount code

  4. Download this report to see individual orders that have used discount codes

Commonly asked questions

Why is there no discount code field appearing on the ticket selection page?

If you have created a discount code but there is no discount code field appearing for buyers to enter in, it could be due to:

1. Your discount code has a delayed start date

If the code is valid only from a future date, the discount code field will not appear (unless a second discount code is created that is valid).

2. Your discount code is disabled

Navigate to the promote > discount codes page on the left-hand menu and click the edit ✏️ icon to the right to enable your discount code.

If a buyer uses a 100% off discount code, will we still have to pay booking fees?

Booking fees are only charged on paid tickets. If a 100% discount is applied, this means the ticket price is $0. This ticket is now 'free' so booking fees will not be charged.

Why does my discount code say "quantity exhausted" when entered?

There are two main reasons your discount code will appear as "Quantity Exhausted" at checkout:

  1. The discount code has reached its usage limit. When creating a discount code, you set a "quantity", which is the total number of tickets that can be discounted.
To increase the quantity, navigate to promote > discounts and click edit ✏️ next to your code.

You can track discount code usage on the reports > discount codes page via the left-hand menu.

  2. There is a "pending" order - or order in progress - using this code. When a buyer uses a discount code and begins their checkout, the code and the ticket(s) capacities are "held" - this is to prevent overuse. When the checkout time expires the ticket and discount code are restocked. If you believe a code should be valid and have available capacity, then try again later (e.g. 20mins).

Can I create discount codes for add-ons?

Discount codes cannot be created for add-ons. We would recommend creating your merch or additional experience items as secondary tickets if you're looking for this functionality.

Can discount codes be applied to specific assigned seats or tables?

No. Discount codes apply only to ticket types and not to any mapped seat in an event with assigned seating.

As an alternative, you can create additional ticket types at discounted pricing and map them to those specific seats. These exclusive tickets can then be hidden and revealed to buyers using an access code. Learn more.
