Many parents post stories, photos, and videos of their kids on social media because they’re proud of their families and they want to stay connected with relatives and friends. But oversharing on social media could potentially put children in danger. Digital kidnapping is a type of identity theft that occurs when someone takes photos of a child from social media and repurposes them with new names and identities, claiming the child as their own. Photos can be photoshopped and used as blackmail. Certain details in posts can also identify where a child lives, plays, and goes to school, potentially putting them in physical danger.
