Overview
Every Hybird breaker on your system must have a unique Modbus ID address. This ID allows the controller to communicate with each breaker over the RS485 daisy-chain. Understanding how IDs are assigned is essential for commissioning larger installations and for troubleshooting communication issues.
Address space allocation
The Hybird system reserves specific Modbus ID ranges for different device types:
10–80: Hybird breakers (RCBO, MCB)
81–109: Reserved for future use
110–119: RCDs
120+: External meters and monitoring devices (e.g. Carlo Gavazzi, third-party energy meters)
How Modbus IDs are assigned
Modbus IDs are manually assigned at commissioning. This is currently done by Hybird directly; in future, installers will be able to configure IDs via a dedicated installer app.
RCDs ship with a default Modbus address of 3. At commissioning, each RCD must be reassigned to an address in the 110–119 range so it does not conflict with breakers in the 10–80 range.
Modbus IDs are allocated once, at the point of commissioning, and are not routinely reconfigured during normal operation.
Changing a Modbus ID
Modbus IDs can only be changed locally (not via the Hybird OS Platform). Only device labels (the human-readable names for breakers and circuits) can be edited digitally in the Hybird OS Platform.
If a Modbus ID must be changed, contact Hybird support.
Duplicate ID detection
The Hybird OS Platform automatically detects and reports duplicate Modbus IDs. Errors can be reported based on:
Device type duplicates — because devices have unique hardware identifiers, the platform detects when two physically different devices appear with the same ID.
Modbus ID duplicates on a per-controller basis — the platform flags when the same Modbus ID is assigned to more than one device on a single controller's RS485 chain.
If duplicates are detected, the affected breakers will show errors or appear unreachable in the Hybird OS Platform.
Troubleshooting duplicate addresses
If you see errors or unreachable breakers that may indicate a duplicate ID:
Check the Hybird OS Platform for error reports indicating which devices are affected.
Contact Hybird support to coordinate Modbus ID reassignment. Do not attempt to reassign IDs in the field without coordination.
Best practices for larger sites
Document your ID map: Keep a record of which breaker is assigned which ID, including circuit name and panel location.
One controller per panel: Each physical panel requires its own controller. Do not exceed 80 breakers per controller.
Multi-panel sites: All controllers at a multi-panel site connect to the same Hybird OS Platform account. Use a consistent naming convention for panels (e.g. "Panel A", "Panel B").
External meters and monitoring devices
External meters (Carlo Gavazzi, power analysers, etc.) connected to your Hybird RS485 network should use Modbus IDs in the range 120 and above. Ensure these do not conflict with other external devices on the same network. Refer to your external device manual for instructions on setting its Modbus ID.
Summary
Modbus IDs are the foundation of Hybird system communication. They are assigned manually at commissioning (currently by Hybird) and can only be changed locally. The Hybird OS Platform automatically detects duplicates. For any ID-related issues, contact Hybird support at support@hybird.energy.
