A guide to the sitemap settings page

Updated over 2 weeks ago

The sitemap settings page is used to view, add or remove XML sitemaps.

In this guide we will explain how to use the web property settings page to:

  • View the project’s monitoring metrics

  • View enabled sitemaps for a project

  • Add XML sitemaps to a project

  • Remove XML sitemaps from a project

View project monitoring metrics

At the top of the web properties page you can view the project monitoring metrics.

These metrics can help you understand the project’s monitoring health. And can be quickly used to diagnose issues with the tool.

For further details about each metric please read the following guides:

  • Inspection Cycle

  • Inspection URLs

  • Daily Inspection Cycle

  • Downloaded URLs

  • Excluded URLs

View enabled XML sitemaps

The sitemap page shows a list of the enabled sitemaps that are are downloaded by our tool.

The list of sitemaps will include both XML sitemap index and XML sitemaps that have been selected by your team.

For each sitemap listed you will see:

  • XML Sitemap: The URL of the XML sitemap file.

  • Sitemap Type: The sitemap type from Google Search Console.

  • URLs: The number of URLs from Google Search Console.

  • Last Read: The last time Google read the XML sitemap file.

Add XML sitemaps to a project

The sitemap settings page can be used to add new sitemaps to the project.

To do this you need to go to the sitemap settings page for a project and click on “Add or Remove Sitemaps” on the top right of the page.

This will take you to the Add or Remove Sitemap page.

Here you can select the sitemap you want to add and hit save.

If you don’t see an XML sitemap you want to select you will need to add the XML sitemap(s) in Search Console Sitemap Report.

If you select a sitemap index file we will automatically download and monitor all the sitemaps from this file.

If you don’t want to monitor all the sitemaps within a sitemap index file, you can unselect the sitemaps you don’t want to monitor.

When you do this we will not monitor the sitemap index file or automatically download the sitemaps from the sitemap index file. This means that if any new XML sitemaps are added to the sitemap index our tool will not automatically download them.

When you have decided which sitemaps you want to add hit save and continue. A message will appear to confirm your decision. Hit “Download sitemaps”.

Our tool will download and monitor the important pages in the XML sitemap file you select. Indexing Insight will recalculate all the monitoring metrics for the project.

When selecting XML sitemaps, please keep the following in mind:

  • We monitor all XML sitemaps in a selected XML sitemap index.

  • We download and monitor your XML Sitemaps on a daily basis.

  • We add new pages found to be monitored before the scheduled inspection.

Remove XML Sitemaps to a project

The sitemap settings page can be used to remove sitemaps from the project.

To do this you need to go to the sitemap settings page for a project and click on “Add or Remove Sitemaps” on the top right of the page.

This will take you to the Add or Remove Sitemap page.

Here you can unselect the sitemap you want from the project.

Hit save and a message will appear to confirm you understand what happens when you remove a XML sitemap from the project.

If you are happy to proceed hit remove sitemap.

You will be returned to the sitemap setting page. The monitoring metrics will be recalculated.

When you return to the sitemap or web properties project the next day you should see the new monitoring metrics.
