Image Optimization compresses the size of your store images to make your pages lighter and faster, and adds alt text so search engines understand what each image shows. Images are usually the heaviest thing on a Shopify page, so this is one of the quickest wins available to you.
Open Image Optimization
In your Shopify admin, go to Apps → AI SEO App.
Select Image Optimization in the app menu.
Find the images you need to work on
Your images are grouped into tabs so you always know what is left to do:
All — every image in your store.
Unoptimized — images that have not been compressed yet. This is your working list.
Optimized — images that have already been processed.
Ignored Images — images you have chosen to skip.
Failed — images that could not be processed. Try optimizing these again, or replace the source file.
Optimize an image
Open the Unoptimized tab. Each card shows the image, where it is used, and its filename.
Click Optimize on the card. The image is compressed and the card moves to the Optimized tab.
Click Ignore instead if you do not want that image touched — for example, a logo or a graphic that must stay pixel-perfect.
Add or edit alt text
Alt text describes an image in words. Search engines use it to understand and rank your images, and screen readers read it aloud to shoppers who cannot see the picture.
Each card has an Alt text field with a pencil icon.
Click the pencil to write your own alt text, or let the app generate it with AI.
Good alt text describes what is actually in the image — "black matte compact powder with open lid" is far more useful than "product image" or a string of keywords.
Tips
Start with product and collection images. These are the pages shoppers land on from search.
Re-check after adding new products. New uploads arrive in the Unoptimized tab, so it is worth a quick pass whenever you add stock.
Watch your daily allowance. Each plan includes a set number of image optimizations per day; if you run out, the remaining images can be processed the next day or you can upgrade your plan.
Check the result. Open a page on your storefront after optimizing to confirm the images still look the way you want.
