Getting Started

Everything a new Spocket supplier needs to set up: listing best practices, Shopify integration, products and pricing.

Written by Arsalan Ali

What makes a perfect listing?

A product listing that is well-equipped with complete details and specifications increases your chances of getting discovered by retailers and boosts attractiveness for end consumers to place orders.

The following outlines the parts of a listing and the elements that help drive more imports:

  • Product Images - Do the photos highlight the product details and market the product in the best way?

  • Listing Title - Are the products accurately titled and tagged?

  • Product Description - Are the key features highlighted? What sets this product apart from similar items?

  • Price Point - Is the listing price enticing to retailers?

  • Variants - Are your products available in other colors or sizes?

  • Processing Time - How quickly can you prepare the product to be shipped?

  • Shipping Information - What is your shipping frequency?

  • Return Policy - Do you offer returns and have customized your return policy?

  • Disclaimers - Did you highlight any special process you have on your disclaimers? (Optional)

Product Images

  1. B-roll highlighting features

B stands for background or behind. Essentially, these are close-up pictures of your items at another angle. This gives better visibility of the item and is very helpful for customers to decide whether to buy the item or not.

Close-up B-roll product photo showing the item's details from another angle
  2. Images for Variants

Customers who are trying to choose which variation of the item to buy will find that having variant images is really useful. This helps them to see other versions of the product more clearly before placing their order.

Variant images showing different versions of the same product
  3. Flat (no model) white background picture

Flat images with a white background are commonly used when selling products online because they provide a standardized and professional look that works with any storefront theme.

Product photographed flat on a plain white background
  4. Sample packaging

Product packaging is extremely important. How you convey the packaging of an item absolutely helps in establishing a favorable first impression and lasting brand loyalty. This also helps you stand out from other competitors and ultimately helps customers in deciding their purchase.

    Example of product sample packaging
  5. Size chart

Sizing charts typically list the precise range of inches (imperial) or centimeters (metric) for each size that is available. If a customer is unsure of their size, they can measure themselves at home using this information. Making sure customers purchase the appropriate size can reduce returns and boost sales due to client satisfaction.

Example size chart listing the measurements for each size
  6. No watermarks

Having watermarked images defeats the purpose of dropshipping. Merchants utilize the platform to look for items to import and sell in their storefronts.

Listing Title

  1. Character count - <80 (including spaces)

Good titles make it more likely that your products will show up in search results and can get people to click on your listings. Include key tags that consumers would look for when searching for a specific product. Long and cluttered titles appear unprofessional, eroding trust in your listings. Leave the remainder of your product's vital information in the description.

  2. Listing specifications

The word structure will vary based on the type of goods you are selling, but it should look something like this:

What it is + Color + Size (length, width, height) + Material + Other Relevant Specification

  3. Keywords

Keywords are an essential component of any product listing. People will use your keywords to find your product. Excellent keyword selection will improve clicks and purchases, so take your time with this step.

Product Description

  1. Using bullet points

This helps avoid the inconvenience of a lengthy paragraph that can be difficult to understand. Instead, it improves readability by having all of the information in a much more user-friendly format.

Example product description written as bullet points
  2. The material of the product

The material you select influences the function, design requirements, and, most importantly, the cost of the product; therefore, it is a significant component of the description, especially if retailers are seeking products that are aligned with their advocacy (e.g. ethical, sustainable, etc.).

Example product description listing the product's material
  3. Care and maintenance instructions

When deciding whether to buy goods, especially apparel, care labels are necessary. It would be difficult to know how to properly care for a certain product without the guidance of an accurate care or content label, which over time might destroy it.

Example care and maintenance instructions in a product description
  4. Dimensions (if applicable)

A product’s measurement is quite simply the size (LxWxH) and weight of a product. While product images are crucial in purchase decisions, dimensions are also important since they give customers a sense of scale.

Example product dimensions listed in a product description
  5. Package Inclusion

By providing the product inclusions, you could help customers understand exactly what to expect from the box.

Example package inclusions listed in a product description

Price Point

  1. Can you offer a minimum discount margin of 25%?

Dropshippers as well as their end customers are attracted to margins. Offering larger discounts helps retailers get a sense of the profit they can realize if they were to list your product in their store.

  2. Are your list prices competitive with other suppliers of the same niche?

Competitive list prices are a main factor for how retailers decide on which products to import when they have multiple similar items to choose from.

Variants

  1. Do you have images for your variants?

These images will allow retailers to select specific variants that they wish to sell. Make sure the name and tag are the same as the original.

  2. Do your variants show the correct number of stock?

An inventory count is required before listing the product on the website. The best practice is to update your inventory count on a regular basis to provide the best product availability. Getting orders for products you don't have deters retailers from importing your products in the future.

  3. Are the variants easily distinguishable by name?

We must ensure that the products listed on our website are accurately described and clearly display their relevant variant names. If you have a product with multiple unique variants, you should be sure that all variants are accurately listed in your catalogue. You should also be using the most specific variant name for each listing.

Example product listing with clearly named variants

Processing Time

  1. Can you process orders within 72 hours of order placement?

The faster an order gets shipped, the happier customers are. Our retailers use Spocket for its access to locally-sourced suppliers. Ideally, processing times that range from 24-72 hours are considered fast. Beyond this, customers tend to rethink their purchases and look for similar items and stores that might ship faster.

Shipping Information

  1. Do you offer free shipping?

Customers love free shipping. Eliminating shipping charges makes it easier for retailers to calculate profit margins and provides the ability to market free shipping to their end consumers, generating a positive experience and repeat orders.

  2. Can you ship items out within 72 hours of order placement?

People want to receive their newly purchased goods as soon as they can. Any type of business that uses express delivery will see an increase in client satisfaction and repeat purchases.

  3. Which regions can you ship to?

Adding your to and from locations allows you to provide a consistent experience to the retailers. The marketplace provides visibility for retailers on where you are shipping the orders from and your location availability.

Return Policy

  1. Indicate terms of when an item is allowed to be returned (e.g. may return item if it arrived defective or incorrect)

It is imperative that you provide the conditions upon which you will accept a return as this is a criterion that retailers will look for when deciding on which products to import.

  2. Indicate number of days from receipt wherein an item is allowed for return

The number of days from receipt that an item can be returned is crucial since it allows the customer to make an informed decision.

  3. Indicate who handles return shipping fee

Indicating the return shipping fee is needed to ensure that the customer is fully aware of their responsibilities as well as to prevent any misunderstandings during the process.

Example return policy with return terms, return window and who pays return shipping

Disclaimers

Disclaimers state what your website's or business's restrictions are. Having disclaimers essentially protects the business against any legal liabilities by informing users that you are not liable for how visitors use your website or for any harm users may experience as a result of your content.

Service level agreement for suppliers utilizing chat functionality

Spocket's chat feature enables retailers to communicate directly with suppliers for any order or product inquiries. This offers an opportunity for building increased brand loyalty among resellers.

This article details the Service Level Agreement (SLA) between the supplier and Spocket, outlining the services and responsibilities required, as well as the expected level of services while utilizing the chat functionality.

This section outlines and defines the responsibilities of the supplier:

  • The supplier shall respond to the Retailer's inquiry within 48 hours. Should inquiries remain unaddressed, Spocket reserves the right to assume control and to put forth any necessary actions to resolve the issue. These actions might include, but are not limited to, refunding orders and canceling orders, amongst others.

  • The supplier shall provide all necessary information and update with inquiries until the issue is resolved.

  • The supplier shall contact Spocket for any monetary-related issues such as refunding an order.

  • The supplier shall escalate issues to Spocket if necessary.

How do I integrate my Shopify store with Spocket for Suppliers?

If you run your online store on Shopify, Spocket can sync product data between your Shopify store and the Spocket dashboard.

What are the things that will be automatically synchronized?

  • Product listings: When you are approved as a supplier, all your current listings will be imported to Spocket, along with their titles, product images, descriptions, and inventory

  • Inventory: If your Shopify inventory changes, your Spocket inventory will also be automatically updated. This change will also be reflected in all retailer stores that are selling your products

  • Automatic import of new products: Any new products uploaded on your Shopify store will be automatically imported into your Spocket account. Please note that you will have to log in to the Spocket dashboard to publish those products

  • Orders: All your Spocket orders will flow directly into your Shopify store. When you add tracking information in your Shopify store, it will automatically update in Spocket all the way through to your retailers. All Spocket orders will have an order number that starts with an "S" so that you will be able to differentiate a Spocket order from your regular Shopify order

What are the things that will not be automatically synchronized?

  • Subsequent changes to product descriptions in Shopify

  • Subsequent changes to product images in Shopify

This is to minimize unexpected changes for the retailers who are selling your products. If you need to make subsequent changes to your descriptions and images, please contact Spocket's Customer Support team.

What if I want certain things to not be synchronized with the Shopify store?

You can turn off auto-sync which will effectively stop syncing everything (e.g. product titles, prices, etc.) except inventory, orders, and tracking numbers.

How do I set the category and subcategory for my products?

Setting the category or subcategory for your products is crucial as it allows you to surface your products under relevant category filters on Spocket. This increases your product discoverability and your opportunities to get more sales on Spocket.

In order to categorize your products, follow these steps:

Selecting products on My Products and setting their category with Edit Category
  1. Log in to the Spocket Supplier App

  2. Go to My Products from the toolbar on the left

  3. Find and select the desired products you would like to set the category or subcategory for. You can utilize search filters and search bar to help you find your desired products

  4. Once you have selected the desired products, click the Edit Category button

  5. Select the category or subcategory that your products best belong to

  6. Click Apply to set the category to the selected product listings

You can also edit the category or subcategory of a product by clicking the Edit button on the product listing itself.

Changing a product's category from its Edit page in the Spocket supplier app

Note on category and subcategory

If you set your products under a certain subcategory, the items will also be visible under the master category.

For example:

Item: Silver Drop Earring

Subcategory: Earrings

Master Category: Jewelry

The above item will show up when a retailer searches under the subcategory “Earrings” and also under the master category “Jewelry”.

If you set your products under a master category, the items will only be visible under the master category.

Important Note: You are only able to apply one category or subcategory to a product. If you make any changes to the category, it will override the previous category that was assigned to the product listing.

How do I add variants to my products?

Products have different variants such as size, style, or color. These variants allow your customers to choose between product options.

You may add up to a maximum of 250 variants per product, each with different inventory, pricing, and SKUs. However, you can only have three variant properties per product. For example, 'Color' can be the first property and 'Size' can be the second.

In order to add a variant to your product, please follow these steps:

Adding product variants under Pricing in the Spocket supplier app
  1. If you are adding a new product, select Add Product from the toolbar on the left

  2. If you are editing an existing product, select My Products from the toolbar on the left then click the Edit button

  3. Under the Pricing category, enable This product has variations

  4. It is required that you add your first property name (e.g. color)

  5. If applicable, you can add a second property name (e.g. size)

  6. You must provide the inventory, price, and suggested retail price of the product

  7. Once you’re done, hit the Post Product button then activate the listing on Spocket.

Important Note: If your products are integrated with Shopify, please do not make any variant changes on the Spocket dashboard as Spocket will always automatically update the product data according to your Shopify store.

How do I set up product pricing and discount percentage?

Entering a product's listing price and suggested retail price in the Spocket supplier app
  1. If you are adding a new product, select Add Listing from the toolbar on the left

  2. If you are editing an existing product, select My Products from the toolbar on the left, and click Edit on your selected product

  3. Add your listing price and suggested retail price

  4. Click Post Product to publish

Important Note: Spocket only supports pricing in US dollars at this time. Spocket is not responsible for collecting and remitting taxes on the suppliers' behalf.

How do I configure product pricing if my account is integrated with Shopify?

If your supplier account is integrated with Shopify, your product pricing on Spocket is set as a percentage off of your product's retail pricing on your Shopify store. The retail pricing refers to your product's unit Price, not the Compare at price.

For example, if your product's retail cost is $10 and a 30% discount was indicated during onboarding, your listing price on Spocket will be set to $7.

When you fulfill an order from Spocket, this is the amount of payment you will receive in addition to the shipping costs that you have set up for this product.

If your retail price changes in your Shopify store, this will effectively change your listing prices on Spocket as well.

How do I change this discount rate in the future?

It is highly recommended that you keep your discount rate the same or offer even more discounts to your retailers to maximize sales. However, if you need to change the discount rate, your pricing must continue to comply with the Pricing and Shipping Fees requirements on Spocket and you will need to send in a request via live chat or email.

How do I turn off price sync with Shopify?

On certain occasions, you may choose to set your product pricing individually (not as a percentage off of your Shopify store's pricing). To do this, you will need to:

  1. If your store is integrated with Shopify, you will see a toggle button to Turn Off Autosync

  2. This will effectively turn off any auto-syncing of product information between your Shopify store and Spocket except for your inventory level

Turn Off Autosync toggle in Account Settings of the Spocket supplier app

How do I configure shipping rates?

As a supplier on Spocket, you can customize your shipping settings by:

  • Including/excluding certain countries that you would like your items to be available to

  • Setting up base shipping rate and incremental shipping rate (the price of shipping for each additional item) as a flat rate that applies to all your items, or setting up different base and incremental rates for each individual item

How do I set up shipping flat rates that apply to all my products?

Viewing flat shipping rates in the Shipping settings of the Spocket supplier app
  1. When you first onboarded as a supplier, the shipping rates that you entered on the application form will be applied to all your products

  2. Please go to your Shipping settings to view these rates

  3. These settings outline your Domestic and International (if available) base shipping costs, incremental costs for each additional item, and estimated shipping time (in business days). An example is attached below:

Example shipping settings with domestic and international base rates, incremental costs and shipping times

For example, customer John Smith orders 3 items from your store to be shipped domestically. The total shipping cost would be $5.99 + $1.00 + $1.00 = $7.99.

How do I set up shipping rates for each individual product?

Editing shipping costs on an individual product's Edit page
  1. Select My Products from the left toolbar

  2. Find your respective product and click Edit

  3. Scroll down to the shipping settings portion of the product's page and edit the shipping costs here

  4. Click Post Product to save your edits

Note: The shipping rates configured in your shipping settings are applied universally to all your products. If you've opted to assign shipping fees to individual listings, those fees will supersede and determine the charges applied to orders.

How do I increase or decrease my shipping costs in the future?

If you have finished setting up your shipping costs during your initial onboarding and would like to subsequently change your shipping costs in the future, please be aware that these subsequent changes to your shipping settings will only apply to your new products (and not your existing products).
