Applying after-hour premiums to bills (PEI)

When providers perform certain emergency or on-call services after-hours, weekends or statutory holidays, they’re entitled to the base rate for the service plus an additional percentage (with the percentage amount depending on the service and the time of day). For example, if a provider delivers a baby after hours from 2am to 4am.

When you bill for a service where the provider is entitled to this premium, when you add billing items (service codes) to the bill, select the Emergency checkbox. This automatically applies the correct adjusted rate for the service based on the service start and end times.

Steps

  1. Create the insured bill from an encounter from a patient's chart or from the Visits dashboard.

  2. For each billing item (service code) you want to apply the premium to, enter the Start Time and Finish Time, select Show Advanced Fields and select the Emergency checkbox. See Adding and modifying billing items (service codes) to your provincial bills.

📌 Note: The Base amount appears to remain the same in the Billing Item window, however it increases in the actual bill.

📌 Note: When Emergency is applied to the billing item, the Base Amount is increased by the correct percentage - based on the service Start Time and End Time.
