Kentucky High-Quality Instructional Resource (HQIR) for Phenomena-Based Science

Inquisitive PreK-5 Science is designated a Kentucky High-Quality Instructional Resource (HQIR). This article explains what the HQIR designation means and how Inquisitive aligns to Kentucky's standards.

What HQIR Means

The Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) defines a High-Quality Instructional Resource using six characteristics. Inquisitive aligns to these characteristics through the markers of High-Quality Science Instruction (HQS).

Standards Alignment

Inquisitive is aligned to the Kentucky Academic Standards for Science. The curriculum is grounded in the K-12 Framework for Science and the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).

Every lesson and unit is mapped to state performance expectations through a detailed crosswalk. This tracks standards coverage and shows how skills build across grade levels.

Instructional Model

Inquisitive lessons use phenomena-driven instruction. Each unit begins with anchor questions tied to observable, real-world events, and students investigate before explaining.

Lessons integrate disciplinary core ideas, crosscutting concepts and science and engineering practices. This is referred to as three-dimensional learning.

Lessons follow the 5E model: Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate and Evaluate.

Assessments

Inquisitive includes embedded formative checks, live student response tools, unit-level anchor maps and end-of-unit assessments tied to performance expectations. Assessments can be completed digitally or on paper.

Science Kits

Optional classroom science kits provide organized, ready-to-use materials for hands-on investigations in each unit. Kits are available with flexible purchasing options.

Professional Learning and Implementation Support

Professional development options include:

  • Virtual and on-site training

  • Specialized sessions, including Making Science 3D, the 5E Model and Visible Thinking Routines

  • Ongoing coaching and support
