Why Can’t I Change the Gallery Type After Uploading Photos?

You’re trying to change the Gallery Type for a gallery after photos have already been uploaded, but the Gallery Type dropdown is no longer available. You may have also tried another browser and seen the same behavior.

This is expected behavior and is usually caused by Global Categories.

Why This Happens

Each Gallery Type can have its own set of Global Categories. These are categories that are automatically created whenever a gallery is assigned to that gallery type.

For example, a Wedding gallery type might automatically include:

  • Getting Ready

  • Ceremony

  • Reception

These categories are tied directly to the Gallery Type itself.

Once images are uploaded into global categories, the gallery becomes locked to that Gallery Type. This prevents changes that could break category structure or image organization.

How to Fix It

You can change the Gallery Type-but first, the images must be moved out of the global categories.

Step-by-Step Solution

  1. Open the gallery.

  2. Create new custom categories inside the gallery (not global categories).

    • Example: “Portraits,” “Details,” or any category you choose.

  3. Move all images out of the global categories and into these new custom categories.

  4. Confirm that no images remain in any global category.

  5. Return to the gallery settings.

Once all images are removed from the global categories, the Gallery Type dropdown will become active again, allowing you to select a new Gallery Type.

Key Things to Remember

  • Global Categories are created automatically by the Gallery Type.

  • Images placed in Global Categories lock the Gallery Type.

  • Moving images into gallery-specific categories unlocks the Gallery Type selector.

  • Browser changes won’t affect this, it’s system-based behavior.
