International Medical Aid (IMA) offers Mental Internships for psychologists, psychotherapists, social workers, and college students, which allows them to work in healthcare environments with the guidance of devoted counselors, psychiatrists, and other healthcare experts. We collaborate with an extensive network of public and private healthcare institutions, empowering the interns and volunteers to utilize their skills to improve community health.

In most developing countries, mental health services are scarce, and cultural stigma frequently deters individuals with mental health concerns from seeking assistance. We work closely with local leaders to create ethical and sustainable community-based projects that tackle the underlying causes of mental health issues.

Overview

Mental Health Interns will work with experienced psychologists, psychiatrists, and mental health professionals in various countries. They will participate in different tasks such as:

  • Patient Assessments

  • Therapy Sessions

  • Community mental health programs.

Interns will also observe and engage in mental health education and outreach activities. This internship offers a comprehensive learning experience to understand mental health practices deeply, develop therapeutic skills, and learn to address mental health issues in diverse cultural contexts. This program is tailored to align with each intern's educational and career goals, promoting personal and professional growth.

As a non-profit, IMA reinvests in the communities we serve. We offer a structured environment supported by local and U.S.-based resources and comprehensive training on safety and eye care best practices. You can learn more about the reasons to join IMA in our global health initiatives.

Mental Health Internship Program Philosophy

IMA coordinates Mental Health Internships and volunteer placements for undergraduate students, graduate students, and licensed professionals in areas of high need across East Africa, South America, and the Caribbean.

By supporting critical healthcare services in these regions, participants gain meaningful exposure to various mental health challenges through our psychiatric internship and study abroad opportunities.

Clinical Experience That Builds a Strong Foundation

Our clinical training model emphasizes active participation and supervised learning. Interns engage in physician shadowing and mental health rotations, allowing them to work closely with professionals, observe therapy sessions and psychiatric care, and participate in patient support.

Developing Cultural Competency Through Immersion

Our cultural immersion approach enables interns to understand better how cultural beliefs and practices shape mental healthcare delivery. Interns can engage with local communities, learn regional languages, and develop skills that improve their ability to work in diverse settings.

Understanding Global Health Systems

Interns gain firsthand insight into global healthcare structures and policies through direct partnerships with international mental health institutions. This experience helps prepare students to address mental health disparities in underserved populations locally and internationally.

Dedicated Mentorship and Ongoing Support

Our experienced local and international staff provide mentorship throughout the program. From clinical orientation to cultural guidance and professional development, our team is available to support interns through every phase of the experience.

Professional Certification and Documentation

Upon completion, all interns receive a certificate of completion and a personalized letter of recommendation from IMA. These documents verify the scope of your clinical engagement and are valuable additions to academic applications and future career portfolios.
