1 - What is an external domain?
As an external domain, we refer to domains that are not in our portfolio.
In other words, domains that you have managed by other providers or competitors or that are directly in your inventory of a registry.
Put simply: domains for which you pay the domain fees to someone else than internex.
To be able to use such external domains with one of our apps, you must first “make the domain known” to the system.
2 - Add the domain
You don’t want (or can’t) transfer the domain to internex for various reasons? No problem!
Our apps can also be operated with external domains. Here’s what to do in this case.
To use an external domain with an app, you must first “make the domain known” to the system.
To do this, please switch to “Domain Manager Pro”. You can find this in the top menu under “Domain & E-Mail”:
Fig. 1: Domain Manager Pro in the top menu
TIP: If you do not see the Domain Manager Pro there, then you may not have authorization for the module. In this case, please speak to the terminal admin in your organization.
In Domain Manager Pro you will then find the item “External Domains” in the left submenu (see Fig. 2, P1)
There you can add a new external domain directly at the top right (see Fig. 2, P2):
Fig. 2: Adding an external domain
After you have entered the domain name, you can choose to use the external domain. There are 2 different types:
Domain only
The domain and the DNS administration are external. All settings are external, to be made at your domain provider.
Domain & DNS
The domain is external, but our free nameservers are used. The DNS settings can be changed directly here.
We strongly recommend our customers to choose the second option, as we can then also offer support for DNS questions, upgrades and migrations can then be carried out without any problems. Of course, you are free to choose which option suits your needs better.
Select “Domain only” then you can verify the domain in the next step or you can select “Perform verification later …” when choosing:

The domain can also be carried out subsequently in the details of the external domain in order to benefit from further features.
3 - Verify domain
If you select “Domain & DNS” as the type of use, you must verify the ownership of the domain in the next step. You confirm that you are the owner of the domain.
For security reasons, this is mandatory for the use of our nameservers.
There are 3 options for verification:
3.1 - Verification via CNAME record
If you have access to DNS management for your external domain, this is the easiest way to verify.
A random, unique subdomain name is displayed in the interface. This can look like this, for example:
internex270f39nmzx.externaldomain.com
Important: Please do not use this example – but the shown subdomain in the interface!
Set a CNAME entry for this subdomain with the value “www.internex.at.” At your external domain provider. Please also note the point at the end – this must also be set!
Once you have set this, you can continue in Domain Manager Pro.
Attention: Please note that DNS or name server changes can take a few hours to become active worldwide.
3.2 - Verification via a file in the main directory
If you do not have access to DNS or nameserver administration, you can also verify the ownership via your current website.
To do this, create a text file in the main directory of your website. The name of the file is displayed in the interface and can look like this, for example:
internex270f39nmzx.txt
Important: Please do not use this example – but the shown subdomain in the interface!
The content of the file does not matter – you can write “internex” in it, but the file can also be empty.
Once you have set this, you can go forward in Domain Manager Pro.
