As a course author, you may already have a lot of learning content that you would like to import into a iQualify course. Instead of copy/pasting content directly into new pages, in many cases it will more efficient to import that content directly into a course using the EPUB format.

What is the EPUB format?

The EPUB format is commonly used for eBooks and contains content 'pages' as well as a hierarchical structure for these 'pages'.

What type of content can I import?

Using the EPUB format you can import 'pages' of your content into iQualify pages. These pages can contain both formatted text and images.

How to convert your content into EPUB

There are a number of ways to achieve this and success can be very dependent on the structure of your content and the export settings of your chosen EPUB converter.

Typically your content will exist in a text, word processing or design document. If you are using a professional publishing application such as InDesign then it will allow you to directly export your content in the EPUB format. This is also the case if you are using Pages on macOS as it has an EPUB export option

However there is not a direct export feature in Word but this article explains how to convert a Word document into an EPUB file using a free application called Calibre.

Further information can be found in this article on different methods of creating EPUB files.

Your exporting application should take care of all the technical detail however, generally speaking, your EPUB file should contain the structure of the content (defined in content.opf) and for each page that you want to create there should be a separate HTML page. These files are then zipped up into one file which should have the .epub file extension.

Generally EPUB exporters will split your content into separate pages based on a primary heading style.  However you may need to investigate the export settings for your particular application.

We recommend keeping your pages short and concise to employ an effective learning structure when the content is imported into pages in iQualify.

How to import your EPUB file

Once you have your EPUB file ready, you can now import it into your course.

  1. Open your course in Create

  2. Navigate to Content

  3. Expand the tab Create course from ePub file

  4. Click the button Import text and image content from an ePub file

  5. Select your EPUB file and upload it

Note that a successful import will overwrite all previous sections, subsections and page content.

Checking the import

Once the import has completed successfully, you will see the new structure of your course content under Organise content. The import process creates a single section with the learning content split into individual pages. Check that all pages are accounted for in your new course structure. If your exported pages did not contain titles then they will have been imported as 'Page 1', 'page 2' etc.

You are free to reorganise the structure of your content. You can create new sections to sub-divide your content further or create new subsections in addition to the one created by the import. Page can be moved between sections or reordered within a subsection.

Preview the content of your new pages to ensure that all your content has come through successfully.

Depending on the structure of your original content and your importer there may be some minor 'tidying up' to do to the content, particularly around text formats such as lists.
