Description
User-based volume purchasing distribution assigns the volume purchasing license to an Apple Account rather than a device. This article covers deploying applications with user-based assignments.
Requirements:
App licenses from Apple School Manager or Apple Business Manager.
The user must be assigned to the device in Jamf School.
The user must be logged into their device with the Apple Account that accepts the Volume Purchasing Invitation.
User-Based App Deployment
The workflow for user-based volume purchasing is slightly different than device based assignment. Please follow the steps below carefully:
Buy/Get licenses for the app in Apple School Manager or Apple Business Manager. If the necessary licenses are already showing in Jamf School, skip to step 2.
Sign into Apple School Manager or Apple Business Manager with a user that has access to Apps and Books.
Click Apps and Books in the left column.
Search for the app you need to get licenses for.
Click on the app.
Choose the volume purchasing location for your token in Jamf School in the dropdown menu.
Write the number of licenses you need to get.
Click Get/Purchase.
If needed, synchronize Jamf School with Apple School Manager to ensure the licenses show.
Ensure the user has the VPP status of Associated in Jamf School.
To check, go to Users > Users and reference the VPP Status column.
If the status is not Associated, follow the steps below to create an invitation for the user to accept.
Ensure the user is assigned to a device in Jamf School and logged into their Apple Account on the device.
Go to Users > Users and select the user to open their user record.
Click Invite User in the lower-right corner of the Profile page.
On the device, accept the Invitation.
From the Dashboard in Jamf School, click Synchronize Now to sync with Apple School Manager.
Check Users > Users to see if the VPP status of the user now says Associated.
Check the app record settings in Jamf School.
Go to Apps > Inventory and click on the app record to open it.
Click the + button and use the dropdown boxes to add desired device groups.
To switch from device based VPP (Assign licenses to devices), click the gear button and choose Change to user-based license assignment.
Click Save in the lower-right corner of the app record.
