Jenni’s AI Chat allows you to ask questions, surface connections across multiple papers, summarize complex research, and even get feedback on your own writing.

What makes Jenni AI Chat unique? You control exactly what sources the AI references to generate its responses.

In this article:

What Can AI Chat Do?

Use AI Chat to:

  • Summarize individual or multiple papers

  • Find key takeaways and unanswered questions

  • Draw connections across a collection of PDFs

  • Ask questions about your current draft

  • Get instant feedback on your writing

  • Bring in web knowledge when needed

How Source Control Works

With Source Control, you can choose which knowledge sources Jenni uses to answer your questions.

You can toggle between the following knowledge sources:

  • ✅ Your current draft / working document

  • ✅ Any source(s) or collection(s) in your Research Library

  • ✅ The "Web" to leverage external journal databases

  • ✏️ Select text in your draft and click "Chat" to add it to the conversation as a custom source

This lets you ask precise, contextual questions - without getting irrelevant or overly general answers.

How to Use AI Chat with Source Control

  1. Click "New" → "AI Chat" from the left sidebar in the Jenni workspace.

    • This will open Jenni's AI Chat on the right side of the workspace

  2. Click the "➕" icon above the chat box to select specific knowledge sources from your workspace to ask questions to.

    • These sources will now appear above the chat.

  3. Want to exclude a source? Just click the ❌ icon next to any knowledge source to remove it from the chat.

  4. Start asking questions!

Send Quotes to Chat

You can also send specific text from your document directly into AI Chat — no copy-pasting required.

Here’s how:

  1. Highlight a sentence or paragraph in your draft

  2. Click the “Chat” button that appears

  3. Jenni will add your selection to AI Chat as a temporary source — just like Library docs or the web

Note: This is a quick way to ask targeted questions about specific parts of your writing — or have Jenni explain or revise it in context.

Manage Your Chats

Click the 🕒 icon in the top-right corner of your Jenni workspace to open your chat history. From here, you can:

  • Revisit past chats and pick up where you left off

  • Rename a chat by hovering and clicking the ✏️ icon

  • Delete a chat by clicking the 🗑️ icon

  • Start a new thread by clicking the ➕ button next to the clock icon

Use threads to organize your thinking—one thread for each research question, paper, or source set you're exploring.
