Managing multi-car transporters

Load building and route planning for MCT and SCT operations

Written by Bianca Monteiro

Multi-car transporters (MCTs) and single-car transporters (SCTs) are trucks that carry vehicles rather than driving them individually. Managing transporters involves load building, capacity planning, and route optimisation.

Adding a transporter

Transporters are set up as vehicles in the Infrastructure section of Jigcar, assigned to a driver with the correct capacity:

  • MCT - typically carries 5-11 vehicles, depending on the truck

  • SCT - carries one vehicle

When building loads, Jigcar uses the transporter's capacity and the actual dimensions of the vehicles being transported to ensure everything fits.

Building loads for transporters

See the Building a load article for a full walkthrough. Key considerations for transporters:

  • Jigcar automatically looks up vehicle specs (width, height, weight) by VIN/VRM

  • The system will warn you if a load exceeds the transporter's capacity

  • Consider pickup and drop-off geography - loads are most efficient when pickups and drop-offs are clustered

Optimising transporter routes

The AI optimiser supports both MCT and SCT routes, using HGV-specific road data that accounts for:

  • Low bridges

  • Weight restrictions

  • Width restrictions

  • Truck-prohibited roads

This means suggested routes are realistic and drivable for large vehicles, not just the fastest car route.
