AI route optimisation explained

How the optimisation engine works and what it considers

Jigcar's route optimisation engine takes the guesswork out of planning. Instead of manually plotting routes, you can run the optimiser and review its suggestions.

What the optimiser considers

When generating route suggestions, the AI looks at:

  • Distance and drive time - finding the shortest, fastest routes

  • Vehicle dimensions - actual width, height, and weight data (looked up by VIN/VRM) to ensure vehicles fit on transporters

  • Transporter capacity - how many vehicles can physically fit on each truck

  • HGV road restrictions - using truck-specific routing that avoids low bridges, weight limits, and restricted roads

  • Multi-day planning - routes that span multiple days, with breaks and overnight stops

  • Existing plans - the optimiser works around routes you've already confirmed, so nothing gets disrupted

How to use it

Step 1: In the TMS, select the routes you want to plan for.

Step 2: Click Optimise.

Step 3: Review the suggested routes - each one shows estimated time, distance, and cost.

Step 4: Accept, adjust, or reject each suggestion.

Tips for best results

  • Include more jobs in each optimisation run to give the engine more options

  • Run the optimiser at the start of your planning session, then fine-tune manually

  • Use it as a starting point, not a final answer - the optimiser doesn't know about soft factors like driver preferences or customer relationships
