General Advice

Local validation requirements here

Doncaster’s BNG level is set at 10%.

The NPPF states: "applicants are encouraged to consider biodiversity net gain early in the development process and factor it into site selection and design. Where appropriate, they should discuss the biodiversity net gain requirements for their development upfront with the relevant local planning authority utilising any pre-application advice services offered by them. This could help establish whether development proposals would be subject to biodiversity net gain and, if they are, enable feedback on the proposed strategy for achieving the biodiversity gain objective and consideration of the Biodiversity Gain Hierarchy to inform the design of the proposals"

Please note, If you work for the LPA and wish to add additional information, please inform the Joe's Blooms team here.

Local Nature Recovery Strategy

Doncaster is part of the South Yorkshire Local Nature Recovery Strategy. Information can be found here.

Specific Requirements

Specific BNG Requirements are set out in Policy 5.26 of the Local Plan (adopted 23 September 2021).

The ecological section of the Green Infrastructure Strategy shall identify how biodiversity will be protected and enhanced to deliver a biodiversity net gain. The application of the mitigation hierarchy will provide a means by which development impacts on biodiversity (habitats, species and ecological networks) will be accounted for, and avoided, mitigated, or, as a final resort, compensated, in line with the GI Strategy and within the context of the Airport Masterplan. Offsite biodiversity enhancement utilising the DEFRA biodiversity Metric, in line with Policy 29, will be required where a biodiversity net gain cannot be secured as part of a development proposal.

Strategic Significance

Specific Strategic Significance requirements are set out in Policy 3.5 of the BNG Supplementary Planning Document (adopted September 2022).

As a Local Nature Recovery Strategy is developed, the Council envisages using this to determine which habitats are considered to be of strategic significance in which areas of Doncaster. As it becomes available, up to date information on the Local Nature Recovery Strategy and how this can be used to determine strategic significance will be published on the Council Website.
