Many developers ask us how they can add various features - such as bird boxes, bee bricks or hedgehog holes- to their designs to boost their biodiversity scores. Sadly, many of these features do not feature in the Government's biodiversity system and, thus don't result in any increase in your BNG score.

Here are some examples of things that don't result in your BNG score increasing (please note that, while they may not improve your BNG score, these are all good things to do, and you shouldn't be dissuaded from incorporating them into your design).

Things that don't result in an increase in biodiversity

  1. Bird Boxes.

  2. Hedgehog Highways / Hedgehog holes

  3. Bat Bricks / Bee Roosts

  4. Swift Bricks

  5. Bee Hotels / Bee Bricks

  6. Log Piles or Deadwood Habitat

  7. Insect Hotels

However, a few things will result in an increase - though please note that they have their own specific rules attached.

  1. A Green Roof (either biodiverse, intensive or other)

  2. Green Wall (either Façade-based or ground-based)

  3. Wildflower Meadows (though has to meet certain criteria)

  4. Ponds

  5. Hedges (but will only boost your hedgerow score)

  6. Rain Gardens

  7. Individual trees
