Resolving problems with Open Banking connections

If you're having trouble connecting your bank account or your connection has stopped working, here's how to fix it.

Common causes

Connection expired Open Banking connections expire every 90 days for security reasons. If your connection has expired, you'll need to reconnect your bank in the app.

Name mismatch Your name in Chest must match the name on your bank account. Even small differences (like a middle name or abbreviation) can cause issues.

Bank system issues Sometimes banks experience technical problems that temporarily affect Open Banking connections. If your bank is having issues, try again later.

Unsupported account type Chest only supports personal current accounts. Business accounts, savings accounts, and joint accounts may not work.

How to reconnect your bank

  1. Go to your account settings in the app

  2. Find the bank connection option

  3. Follow the prompts to reconnect

  4. You'll be redirected to your bank to authenticate – log in as you normally would

Once reconnected, your saving rules will resume as normal.

Troubleshooting tips

If you're having trouble connecting:

  • Make sure you're entering the correct bank login details

  • Check that your bank's app or online banking is working normally

  • Try connecting on a stable Wi-Fi connection

  • Make sure the Chest app is updated to the latest version

  • If your bank requires two-factor authentication, have your phone or security device ready

Supported banks

Chest supports most major UK banks through Open Banking. If your bank isn't appearing as an option, it may not yet support Open Banking connections with third-party apps.

What if my bank isn't supported?

If your bank isn't supported, you can still use Chest – but some features like round-ups and other transaction-based saving rules won't be available. You'll still be able to make one-off contributions and use features that don't require a bank connection.
