If a Direct Debit payment has failed, here's what might have happened and how to fix it.
Common reasons for failure
Insufficient funds - The most common reason β there wasn't enough money in your bank account when we tried to collect the payment.
Direct Debit cancelled - Your Direct Debit mandate may have been cancelled, either by you or by your bank. This can sometimes happen if you switch bank accounts or if your bank has concerns about the payment.
Bank details changed - If you've switched to a new bank account or your account details have changed, your existing Direct Debit mandate won't work.
Bank blocked the payment - Occasionally, banks block payments they consider unusual. This can happen with new Direct Debits or unexpected amounts.
What happens next
If a Direct Debit fails:
We'll notify you in the app or by email
Your contribution or saving rule deposit won't be processed
We won't automatically retry the failed payment
You can make a manual one-off contribution if you'd like to make up for the missed payment.
How to resolve it
If insufficient funds: Ensure you have enough money in your account before your next scheduled contribution or saving rule collection. Saving rules are collected weekly, so make sure funds are available.
If your Direct Debit was cancelled: You'll need to set up a new Direct Debit mandate. Go to your account settings in the app or contact us at hello@joinchest.com for help.
If you've changed banks: Connect your new bank account in the app and set up a new Direct Debit mandate.
If your bank blocked the payment: Contact your bank to find out why and ask them to allow payments to Chest. Then ensure the Direct Debit is still active, or set up a new one if needed.
Impact on saving rules
If a Direct Debit fails, your saving rules won't be able to collect that week's contributions. Once the issue is resolved, your rules will resume as normal the following week.
